Sorry this is going to be long
I have some milsurp weapons that have no real value so I want to "try" to make them look better. I don't know anything about this subject so I need a lot of help. First do I use a varnish remover or just start slowly sanding it down? Once all the varnish is off what's next? First gun is a .303 and I want a light walnut color and that's it. I have some birchwood casey 3 pack starter also. What if I get the wood stain too dark? How would I lighten? After staining do I need to "seal" the stock with anything or leave it like it is? What is Tru-Oil for? The next gun I want to finish is a Mosin so of course I want a reddish color tint to it. Can I use Minwax? After this stain, what do I use to get a shine to it? I hear a lot about BLO and some other kind of oil that's slipping my mind at this time. What are they for and in what order are they used in? About the only thing I do know is to sand with the grain and start off with something like 120 or 150 grit and work my way up towards 300 or so, but after that is beyond me....
Sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to learn all I can about this.
