I would use 147gr Speer Gold Dots. Or 147gr. DoubleTap ammo.
The extra recoil and battering of the gun of the 124gr+P isn't worth it, IMO.

Here is an interesting article on ammo.
If you use Google in search of various terms, you can find details. This article is the short form of a lot of other info you will find. It ties together the difference between marketing, data, and real world use.
In 9mm I carry Corbon 125 grain +P's. I find it has what I'm looking for. I can't get the 124 grain +P's here so I went up one grain. 115-125 grain should serve you well as defensive ammo in your 9mm. I leave the 147 grainers for my sub-gun.

Your question is a very good one. Remember the LARGER the Bullet 147 grain, say verses a 127 Grain. The Larger Bullet 147 will produce more recoil, and be slower, and provide less penetration.
Personally I like a lighter Faster Bullet like the Ranger 127 Grain BALL BUSTER.
What ever you purchase for Self Defense, buy some Extra to practice with, like loading a few Hot Round when you Range Practice.
Also remember most BALL, or FMJ 9 mm Practice is 115 Grains, so you are use to small recoils if you practice with this stuff.....

It depends upon how you define "Best"
Some folks like a lighter and faster bullet like the 115 Gr JHP +P+ rounds. Other folks seem to think the slower and heavier 147 gr JHP's are best.
If you split the difference and use one of the 124-127 gr +P or +P+ rounds you will do very well. Almost everyone admits they work well. They are fast enough for the light and fast crowd and heavy enough and penetrate deep enough for the slow fast guys.
Thanks everyone for the info I appreciate it.

I carry 115gr GDHP +P+ or CorBon 115gr +P. Both are good ammo for the G19.Never had a problem with them. You should try many types and make up your mind then, do not take anybody's word for it.And do not talk to the guy that is selling you something, they want your money. Glocks are made for the NATO standard ammo look up and see what the stats are on it to see if it will get beat up, it will not. +P and +P+ are ok.
Any +P or +P+ JHP ammo will do. The differences are not going to be noticed by the BG.
That being said, I carry 9PBLE (G19) or Cor Bon 115+P (BHP). Both shoot right on the sights in the respective guns.
If I still lived in the frozen North, I'd probably go for a 124-127 gr +P+ load in the winter. Down here, heavy clothing isn't an issue.
Some guys love the 147s, but, even though the best ones are much better than the original FBI choice, it's not easy to find police departments that issue them. I'm sure they're out there, but I haven't heard of one in a long time.

What Japle said:
GoldDot +p / +p+
Federal 9BPLE 115-grain +p+ / 124-grain +p+
or anything DoubleTap, of which I hope to partake shortly.
Pick one from a major manufacturer.
Make sure it's reliable in your gun and that you can make hits when required.
That's the "best" load.
I prefer the 147 grain RangerT.
