View Full Version : Ramboozeld in a trade
Struck a deal with a ah-er-um... "pard" in California to trade shootin irons. Mine was of lower value so I included some extra Yankee dollars that he has in his purse for over a week. We agreed to ship the first part of this week. I notified him when my FFL shipped and was waiting to hear that he had sent his to me. When I didn't hear back I started to worry and last night I learned my concerns were well founded...
Apparently (he claims) the Gun Store he was shipping the gun from sold his Vaquero by "mistake." I'm not sure how that could happen but it really don't matter cuz it's adorning some other hombre's holster now. He has offered to send my money back and ship back my Ruger OR give me the proceeds of the sale of his Vaquero, which he did not specify an amount. He did NOT offer to cover my FFL fees, shipping, etc...
Shoulda listened to my gut on this one.
Hopefully I'll get my gun and most of the money back. What I don't get back I'll write off as "Dumb Tax."
Hopefully something will turn up at today's gun show. I had my heart set on the Vaquero in 45 colt. Now it feels like I put on my boots before dumping out a rattler.
Was this a deal made through GT?
too bad your,we're not in the same state cause i have a first generation ruger 5 1/4 inch SS Vaquero!
I would call the law offices of Hillerich and Bradsby. ;?
Well the good news is I got my gun back and the money except for shipping. The bad news is I had to do the paperwork to get it back...
The deal was made on another forum though I believe he is a member here too.
Paid some "dumb tax" on this deal. Hopefully I learned something. First deal I've ever had go bad so I guess I was a little overconfident and trusting. 99.99% of the folks I've met or had dealings with here were straight shooters and I'm proud to call a few others friends.
I would insist that he covers the shipping/ffl and any additional $$s for your lost. His "accidently" selling a gun is HIS mistake and not yours. You held up your end of the bargin.
As far as dumb tax, it's hard doing a trade overline. It's sometimes better todo a face-face or just bypass any trades and passing of items for a gun.
just my 2 won opinion.

If he was of good character, he would have covered it without my asking. Since I had to ask, I knew he wasn't going to "Man-up."
I believe the only reason he didn't keep the $75 difference is that I sent it Postal Money Order and he risked more trouble than it was worth. Recovering the shipping and fees is more trouble than it's worth to me... Dumb tax paid in full.
and how old are you?reason i ask is i have been ripped off enough in my life that i dont trust anyone in a deal .face to face or forget it!o yes and you better have the correct permits/paperswork,id etc or then again no deal!

I am 40 something...
I am luckier than you I guess. I've done literally hundreds of deals online and this was my first that has gone this far south, but it did turn out OK.
The deal went through proper channels FFL to FFL. The other party did not deliver on his end so his FFL sent my firearm and back to mine and I had to do the paperwork all over again... Like I said, I paid some "Dumb Tax"... I got off pretty cheap though, just shipping & fees.
Few of those deals were for firearms(~ two dozen?), but many were for related items. My Ebay feedback is 100% with hundreds of transactions. I've made some deals since, though I was less (over)confident about it.
It served as a good lesson. I got mixed signals from the dude and I should have bailed. The precautions I took, worked. The risk was pretty low.
MOST I would estimate that frequent here (99.9%) are folks of higher class and are honorable. Some I can even call friends. ;c ;c

surely you must've bumped into the leeches..?
i've had 3 out of 120 where i lost 'something' on the deal. shipping once, 60$ (fraud) once, and 'delivered unuseable' once. arguable that last one is my fault, i was an optimist.
but seems to me about 2-3% of the folks i bump into are either incompetent or venal, and the ones who ARENT such are fairly easily recognized. it's those on one edge with little reputation to protect that seem to have the problems.
I know it's unusual but I have been very lucky on Ebay buying and selling. I've done more business on forums like this and there too, I've been lucky, knock on wood...;)
Sure, I've had some knuckleheads contact me but I never struck a deal with em. So, no harm, no foul.
I think what happened on my deal was they guy got a better offer before he mailed off his gun and decided to screw me.
Sounds like he took the gun to the FFL for shipment to you and ran into someone else that offered him more than his deal with you. Or the FFL already had someone looking for the same gun and paid a premium for it. But that's just my thoughts.
I've only bought two long guns through state to state transactions on the Internet. I was lucky. Both deals were as represented and everything went smoothly.
If he screwed you on this long distance deal I doubt you will get any of your expense money back.
Good luck with your next find - J.Solo
