I just traded with my father-in-law, for a like new Ruger M77 with old-style tang safety, in 7mm Rem Mag. It is blued, of course, with walnut stock. He bought it new in 1983, and put it up and not shot it since 1984. It's got a Tasco 3x9x40 Supercon Coated Omni-View Opti-Centered scope (looks like model #628V), which I've never heard of, but seems like a decent scope, with Holden see-thru mounts.

Any idea what a set-up like this should cost? I traded him a pistol for it, but he kind of liked a more expensive one that I had, although he seemed happy with the one he got. I am mainly wanting to know if I should offer him the more expensive pistol instead of the current one he has. FYI, the pistols involved are around $450 and $800 value in the condition they're in.

Thanks for any advice.

The $450 pistol is a sufficient trade. I personally would not pay any more than $400 for a used M77 Mark 1 with a Tasco scope. I've seen old Ruger M77's in excellent condition go for under $400 at gunshows and new M77 Mark 2's run around $500. That being said, I prefer the Mark 1's and would rather buy a used Mark 1 than a new Mark 2.

Thanks for the info. I don't feel so bad now. I offered him the $800 pistol for the 7mm and $250, but he didn't want to pony up the cash. Oh well, I'm happy with the deal and I hope he is too.

I think I'll take my Burris off another gun and replace the Tasco.

Thanks again.
