View Full Version : the perfect carry gun...
I've been on the pursuit of the perfect carry gun now for a few years. Taurus PT145, Glock 23, Sig P229. I seem to like them when I buy them but over time, I find fault with them for one reason or another.
I'm hoping a USP-C .40 cal will end my search. Any firsthand experience on why you prefer the HK over others.
NOTHING IS PERFECT, and i mean NOTHING!!!
Even P7 that I think comes really close to it, but still..., NOT PERFECT...
My experience with USPc 40SW is that the gun is pretty darn accurate, also a very stouty recoil it has, but this is also subjective.
I used to own G30 a long while back, and remember I enjoy shooting it a lot. But, USPc 40 is something I don't want to shoot ever again, I don't know why.
I recommend try one, if you can find, before buying.

P7M8 or ti .38 revolver
I really, really like my USPC .40, so much that I don't look at pistols anymore.. I've found my keeper.

I honestly love my USP 45 Compact more than any handgun I have ever carried or owned. I like the safety/decocker (including the ability to use other variatns if you want). I can carry cocked and locked, or decocked with a round in the chamber...or even decocked and locked I suppose.
The trigger is the worst part of this gun. Not to say that it is bad, it's a combat trigger. The gun itself is accurate, but most importantly, like any HK I have had, it eats anything.
The .40's grip on the frame is a bit smaller than the .45's, and I have big hands and prefer the .45 anyway. But I agree with the suggestion of trying one out before you spend your dough. And as was already stated, NOTHING is perfect.
I carried a P7 on duty as a rural police officer for quite some time. Now I prefer the USPc (ccw in a larger metro area) due to less weight and higher mag capacity in the same approx, size pistol. Also, it is available in .40 which is also a plus. The USP allows a double (or more) hit on a slow primer rather than requiring the dumping of the questionable round. The USPc is available in a variety of configurations to fit your need ...SA/DA/DAO/Decocker, etc. Don't get me wrong, I still own the P7 as an investment ... just try to buy one at a reasonable price now that they are no longer produced ... the price is insane ... possibly another plus for the USPc. $.02

P2000 .40 did it for me.
My choices in order of preference, for all around CCW suitability, revolvers excluded. I do, or have owned all of them.
Glock 26/27/33
HK P7
Glock 19/23/32
HK USP-Compact
Sig P229 (but that's a stretch, too large)
No such gun but in the winter, a P7 or a G20/21 ride on my happy hip.
It would be perfect if I could just wear this when I leave the house:

Perfect depends on everything.

Some may not like the USPC .40. I shot the ever living crap out it while I attended a police academy a long time ago. It later became a fine off duty weapon.
I liked the USPC so much a few years ago I bought a 9mm version from a buddy. Just last weekend I put 500 rounds in it and never had a problem. This gun has taken 6 advanced classes in firearms and never once failed unless I forced it to.
Try one out. They are nice. Bulky but nice. I wish the slide was lower and perhaps the trigger as clean as a Glock or 1911. But all things considered...I really like my HKs.
"FEAR NOT!!!"
You can lighten up the trigger pull( assuming you have LEM trigger) by replace various springs in the trigger group, or as easy as change hammer spring to the V1 hammer spring, that will help out a bit already.
Mine is done by an HK instructor(one good thing for living here in VA). It has only 3-3.5lb pull, shorter reset, and over traval stop to boost! You can even make it as light as 1-2lb trigger with around 1mm of reset, if you'd like( by get rid of firing pin block, that is). His compitition USP is set up that way, it just amazing!
Uspc in 9mm are light and powerful... Thers no such thing as a weak 9. Trust me, i know why I say it...
P2000 .40 is my best so far after no less than 15 others of various makes. Recoil in the p2000 platform is rather mild.

I own that exact firearm, and I love it. I'm 6"0' 180lbs, and the size of it fits me perfectly. The easy of use and better recoil system are key attributes.

The USP40 compact, with Hogue Handall rubber grips, is one of my favorites. Very comfortable to shoot, eats anything, accurate.

 I love the USPc . I Have a 357sig with the 40cal barrel. I also have the P2000sk for summer carry. I've had it for about 16 months now and it is the pistol I carry the most any more. BTW it is a 40 cal. Anyway, H&K's are sweet, you can't go wrong with the one that fits you and your needs best!! Have fun & stay safe!!;f

So, how long will it be before you sell or trade that one. ;)
p7 is darn near close to perfect for me.
Give it a try. It is very slim, it is very safe, it is very very accurate.
Good luck

the perfect carry NON-revolver is a glock 24C or a CZ tactical. the reason is the long barrel and high cap.
you can't figure hiding it as critical to carry. critical is: works. hiding it is another problem.
CARRYING it is another problem. that's not my issue either, i don't have to carry your weapon, so suffer.
but if you want what WORKS. get highest cap, and easiest to shoot a bunch of times at handgun ranges accurately.
either of those two options will provide that.
oh. but the perfect carry REVOLVER is a slicked up model 13 IWB just left of your belly button. and it's faster'n heck. you lose something on the capacity. quite a bit. you gain all to heck on 'went bang first'
Can't go wrong with an H&K P2000SK in .40 S&W. Well-made, reliable, accurate, good knockdown power, light, mild recoil, 9 shot mag with one in the tube and very compact. What's not to like? The perfect concealed weapon, period. Price should not be a factor. How much is your life worth? I'll gladly pay a few hundred extra for that peace of mind.

I have a USPC 40 LEM which I carry in my a C-TAC. It's light, conceals easily, and I really like the LEM mod. Shoot real darn good too, noticible recoil is about what I'd expect from the piece. The lower receiver is very light so there is a bit of snap, but it's very managable.
I either carry that or a SIG P229, which I like to shoot a bit better, but it's a bit larger and heavier.
I think either of these two are pretty ultimate in EDC.
I've ended my search.

Every thing I own except the family and dog can be bought. (at the sufficiently high price of course). Of course my friend you would get a very slight discount. ;)
I had the same problem drake22, I just couldn't seem to find anything that I liked. I tried Sigs, Glocks, Beretta's & variuos 1911's. I would always find something I didn't like about them. I finally traded off some of the other pieces for a USPc 9mm, all I can say is that I loe this thing. I have meps installed next week. HK rocks.
+1 that there is no perfect CC gun, and +1 that I've tried just about every major maker, platform, and manual of arms.
Currently I carry a USPc45LEM. I also put Meprolights on mine, and I have the non-extended baseplates back-ordered... can't wait for those to arrive. It's only real tragic flaw is the non-standard, basically useless rail. Too bad that can't make an inline production upgrade and just fix that on the frame.
If I need something smaller for summer carry or clothing/concealment reasons, I have a Kahr K40. Neither is perfect, but for now I'm covered.
