View Full Version : P40 Covert Take Down Tips
Hi All,
I'm having difficulty trying to remove the slide stop from my P40 Covert.
After aligning the two index marks (which is a bear to hold) and trying to push
out the tight slide stop pin at the same time with a non marring screw driver handle I can't get it to budge. Any way to make this procedure easier?
TIA,
Rod S

There are two ways to hold the marks in the slide and frame in alignment with one hand.
Instructions for right handers:
Make sure the pistol is empty, check the chamber.
1. lay the pistol on it's right side facing to your left. Put your left thumb down through the front of the trigger guard. Place your left forfinger against the muzzle and (resting the grip against something if required) and use your left forefinger to press the muzzle back to align the marks.
2. Start by gripping the pistol in your right hand. Then wrap your fingers over the top of the slide and pull the side back.
Once the marks are aligned and held there, you can press the pin out from the right side with your other hand. Then reach around to the left side of the pistol and pull the slide stop out completely out and ease the pressure off the slide. The trigger will have to be pulled to release the striker before the slide can be taken off of the frame. It may be necessary to also hold the trigger part way or all the way down while sliding the slide off the frame.
On a PM pistol it will take a dozen times to loosen up the slide stop enough to be able to get it out with one hand.
Thanks for your help Warm Rain I really appreciate it

I have a new CW9 and it has been apart four times. I still need to tap the slide stop to get it to budge. It is very tightly held in place - not like a 1911 at all.

Right, the 1911 has a plunger that holds the slide stop up or down, but in the Kahr pistols the slide stop is held continually down by a spring. And for some reason it seems the slide stops are harder to remove from the polymer Kahrs. In my PM9 it took a dozen or more times to get it to start to loosen up. I think that they are held in more tightly by a different part of the same spring...

I’ve made myself a wood “takedown block” for my Kahrs… all I have to do is lock the slide back & insert this wood “takedown block” into the ejection port so that when I release the slide it’s pinched between the barrel & the breach-face. The “takedown block” holds the slide so that the “witness marks” line up perfectly for removing the lever. This gives me my 2 hands back again for whatever means necessary for removing the lever. ^c
FYI, Kahr sells a plastic “takedown block” for the "all steel" Kahrs, but has yet to offer one for the poly Kahrs... I guess the demand wasn't very great for the "all steel" ones?

Make sure that when the marks are aligned that the rear of the slide stop is in fact in the cutout on the slide. Ive got four Kahrs and the marks and the cutout don't align the same on any of them. Also, I just make sure the slide stop and cutout are aligned and press the gun down on the edge of something non-marring like a two by four or workbench table.
