poor mans rifle books

I have often seen the books at stores and gun shows but never really picked one up to see if it contained something I didnt already know. I am mostly talking about the poor mans scout rifle and poor mans sniper rifle books. Has anybody read these used them for reference? How are they or is it just a preaching to the choir on rifle modifications like I'm thinking it is. I have worked on a few mausers and I plan on picking up maybe two more for $50 each at my next show to make into big bore plinkers. If I get one with a nice bore a base and straight power scope might find its way on it.

These are the books by Don Paul? He has quite a large number of books available thru the military PX system. I have read the Poor Man's Sniper Rifle, and its ok. Don Paul's writing is kind of coarse and does'nt read well and the books are not edited that well. There is some good info gleaned from several military field manuals on basic balistics and technique but most is just common sense. I would'nt say there is anything new exclusive to these books. Nothing we have'nt seen in the major gun magazine over the years.

My whole take of the sporterized military rifle/poor mans sniper rife is you are better off in the long run to just buy a used name brand hunting rifle such as a Ruger, Remington, or Savage. By the time you buy the rifle, do all the sporterizing work, and put on a mount and rings you could buy a used rifle for the same amount of money. My last purchase was a private sale of a S&W imported Howa short action in .308 with an inexpensive Tasco 3x12 Mil Dot scope. Price was $200.
