View Full Version : Security Six Stainless
After close to 15 years, I finally got my Security Six out and put 50 rounds thru it. I probably shot it better than ever before. With as many rounds as I have thru it, the trigger is butter smooth in double action and I found I had a fast recovery. Range guy had to warn me about rapid shooting after I emptied six quick ones.
I know that using CCI Blazer, that they are not very hot so I may have to get a hotter round and see how I do.
After all this, I am thinking about a snubbie. Any suggestions?
No snubbie suggestion. I just wanted to say I have had 2 security sixes. Sold one, other one stolen, which I replaced with a GP100. I much prefer the Security Six. Maybe a used 3" Speed Six would fill the bill, or is that still too big?

Me to. The Security Six just feels better in my hand and handles better than my GP100. If i had to choose between the Security Six and the GP100, the GP100 would be the one looking for a new home.

If you like the Security Six & are looking for a snubbie, you'd REALLY like the Speed Six. I picked one up about 6 months ago (stainless) for $225. It's big & robust (same frame size as the Security Six series) compared to many others, but it's one of my favorite wheel guns.

I've been looking for a stainless steel Speed Six for a while now. I know there's one out there somewhere with my name on it. We just haven't found each other yet.
I actually just finished putting a Police Service Six in the classifeds here. Great gun, but I just shoot my GP100 more.
You will have 2 problems with a Stainless Security Six:
[1] All stainless handguns get too hot to handle...
[2] You will need to shake the gun to get the burned powder out of the ejection rod port.
All stainless handguns get too hot to handle...
??
Stainless is actually more heat resistant than cro-molly steel, so if anything (and this is grasping at microscopic straws), stainless "may" handle heat better. But I don't think I've ever heard of anyone shooting a revolver till it got too hot to handle.
I know that my 4 stainless handguns and 1 carbine get no hotter than my carbon steel firearms.

Honestly, I've shot many stainless guns & have never had trouble with heat - of any sort. Are you shooting on an open range in bright sunlight?

Hello fellow Houstonian. I am a big fan of Rugers SP101 with the 3 inch barrel. The slightly longer barrel length makes the gun a bit more secure when I just slide it in my jeans for a quick trip to the store.
The stainless Security Six is a very sweet shooting gun and, as srong as an "N" Frame Smith. I wish Ruger still made the little gun.
If you can find one the smallest Security Six is in 2 3/4 inches.
....send me one???
Just put a GP100 .357mag on layaway. On the way out the door I bumped into a cop I know and he tells me the gun is a POS and I should get a Security Six or something else instead. He was in a hurry and couldn't give me specific reasons why I made a "mistake". I have very little experience with revolvers and just wanted a beater I could throw in the car and shoot at the range.
I have NEVER owned a .357mag (shame on me). Anyway, I can keep the gun on layaway for 3 months so I can easily change my mind. I got it with a rubber grip amd the original grip in 95% condition for $275.00.
The gun looks fine to me and I don't see any probs mentioned on this forum.
Whaddya think? BTW, this cop is a PITA know-it-all so...
Thanks,

JackC53- Everyone's opinion is different, the only one that matters is yours. The GP100 is a great handgun. While as stated elsewhere in this post, I have owned Security Sixes, and currently own a GP100. While I do prefer the S.S., I find no fault with the GP. Super strong, I doubt that you will wear one out for many many years. Wolf Springs are supposed to smooth it up a bit, although I never needed them, so never tried them.

I've had a stainless Security Six for a long time and it is, by far, the most accurate shooter I've ever seen. I'm always taken back by how accurate and tight the groups are when I take it to the range.
Everytime I think about getting rid of it for something else, I shoot it and think "are you nuts? This is just too good to give up."
It's actually my wifes gun and we load it with Corbon 38 Spl +P JHPs. She has a weak grip so I had a trigger job done when we bought it and she can shoot it great double or single action . She's scary she's so good.
One Security Six.. NOT for sale.
Thanks again for the advice guys. As it turns out my FFL got a Security Six in that was $10 less than the GP100 I had on layaway. Further, it was stainless vs. the blued GP100. Sooo, I took the GP100 off and put the SS on layaway.
I'm SURE the GP100 would have been just fine but since the gun will probably go in my car gun safe I'm better off with stainless.

I have had a boatload of Sec. Six, Speed Six, and Service Six revolvers pass through my hands in the last 30 years or so. They have been the most trouble-free revolvers I have ever had. I still have a few and sometimes carry a 3 inch Speed Six or Service Six (which I round-butted) and sometimes hunt with a 6 inch SS.
I still prefer a little lighter SW 3 inch Mdl 64 for carrying over my Rugers but the Rugers are great guns and still available fairly cheaply compared to the Smiths (unless you run into people who think they are now collectors, especially with the Speed Sixes).
You cannot go wrong if you find a good deal on the Security Six style revolvers.

Thanks Valian. I won't be carrying it so the weight/bulk doesn't bother me. A few things have come up (like tuition) so I may have to just wait on this next purchase.

not to take anything away from my gp-100 but my old security 6 with its tapered barrel handled more like my smith model 19.livlier!

That's what my next weapon is going to be. Stainless 4" Security-six. My dad has one and I grew up shooting it and love that weapon. If anyone has one they want to get rid of please let me know.
