Anyone know what book this is?

Anyone know the name of the book about this kid who gets a coon dog. The dog ends up dieing towards the end of the book. Sorry, can't remember any more about it. Any Ideas?

IIRC there were two movies along those lines that may have originated from books, one was called 'Old Yeller' and the other may have been called Biscuit Eater. I remember the dog in it being called that. Been a long time so I may have screwed it up.

I looked at the description for "Old Yeller" on BN.com and it doesn't look like it.

Looked up 'The Biscuit Eater' on Amazon, it's about a kid and a bird dog. Dog does get shot towards the end, however. Doesn't look like either of these were much help.

I just sold a signed copy of that from our rare book room. I almost bought it myself, I loved that book as a kid.
