View Full Version : What sights to order for a newbie Glocker's first purchase?

I truly appreciate the mind share that takes place on GT. I've been reading this forum for a while during the 12 week wait for my purchase permit to arrive and feel I have learned a lot. Well, my permit has finally come & now its time to make a purchase. I have decided on a G19 but have only minimal experience at the range. I am wondering if I should purchase it with the standard fixed sights and spend a little time getting comfortable with the gun before making any decisions on changing sights. I know that there are a lot of good choices for night sights. But since I lack experience, would you recommend starting with standard fixed sights & practice, practice, practice or ordering the 19 with factory adjustable sights, or factory night sights?

Order it with oem fixed and replace them with an aftermarkert night sight. The oem adjustables stink and the oem night sights are staked on rather that via the 3/16" nut. Look at Trijicons, Mep, Ameri-glows and decided what you like. That's the way to go.
get the standard sights,
then replace them with hienie's slant pro sights.

The Glock adjustable sights are plastic, just like the standard sights. I don't have much faith in either.
If you will be using the gun in competition you might need adjustable sights. Especially if you shoot low power target loads and high power defensive loads in the same gun. Since your talking about a 9mm - that's not real likely.
Fixed sights are the best in my opinion for a carry gun and plinking, they also cost less.
I have the Glock steel rear sights on my carry/defense guns with Trijicon night sights on the front only. When I was a cop I had night sites front and back - but I've changed my thoughts about this.
High quality adjustable sights and mybe a fibre optic front sight will be over $100 (Dawson or Heinie). Night sights front and back will be 60-100 and they way I setup my carry gun sights is about $50.
Just my opinion - I'm sure more will follow.

I gotta go with Todd on this. Meprolight is my first choice for NSs.

My first was a G21 with fixed sites. I wanted to become more comfortable with the gun before I made any modifications. My next gun was a Ruger with adjustable sites. I felt more experienced and was ready to experiment with the adjustables. As for night sites I just ordered a G22 with night sites, but I'm begining to think it was a mistake based on the posts that I've read.

It's not that the oem night sights are bad, it's just you'd limited yourself to the sights that come on the gun. Oem fronts are staked on and not meant to be removed/reused.

You may want to look at Novak trijicons, they are very low profile and have a great look.

In other words, I would have to replace the slide when they burn out?

Nope - you will be able to pop out the front sight out and drift out the rear.

No, I meant the front sight is toast after you remove it. If you go with the screw on, as all the aftermarket ones are, you can change on a whim. Once you twist that OEM front off, it may glow for another 10 years but it's not going back on the gun.
I would start with what you have. If you do not like it I would go with just replacing the front sight. Not only do you save money, it is also, in my opinion, a better tactical weapon at night, just put the glowing thing on the bad thing and pull.

Meps are great.
First thing I notice when waking up are the three dots on the nightstand.
They glow like Tsjernobyl.

I havn't replaced my stock sights yet, but night sights will eventually find their way onto my Glock...

Thanks for input. It confirmed my thoughts. I ordered a G19 today with standard fixed sights. I figured I should get used to it first & then make the determination to upgrade to some night sights. I've reached the age where my eyes are beginning to play tricks on me & I am ultimately concerned about what will be the best set up for my needs (target & home defense). I appreciate the fellowship of GT & am looking forward to my first Glock! ^5

Best bet brother! The 19 is the go to Glock!
If you insist on night sights, check out Heinie Straight Eights. I have a set of Slant Pros on my G21 that I use for IDPA/IPSC/3Gun. No issues at all with them. They don't hang up on anything, are steel, and are beefy enough to last. Next step will be to race cut them for a little wider rear notch.

Get those Meps and you'll be happy. Topglock.com is where I got mine. Good Luck.

+1 These have a great sight picture. The only sights I like more are the OEM sights on a P7. Novak's aren't bad either.

Everyone agrees that they don't like the plastic front sight, if for no other reason it's fragile and will eventually come off.
Replace it with a white dot steel front sight which will set you back less than $20.
This way you can save your money while being assured the sights will be there when you bring the gun up, and get some valuable trigger time before you start experimenting with what you might or might not later prefer.
