Newbie Questions on Scopes

I just bought a Savage 12BVSS in 5.56mm. I need a scope and rings for it.

Questions:

1. Savage has a list of scope mounts on their website, but do all scope have the same diameter tubes (where the mounts clamp)?

2. What do you guys suggest would be a decent scope? I'm looking for someone around $500-700. I'm thinking a 40mm lens and a zoom range of 5-12x would be suitable for this cartridge? I'd like to be able to fully utilize the range of the 5.56mm round.

3. Where the best place online to get a good deal?

1. Most scopes come with a 1" tube. Some are 30 mm.

2. For $500 - $700 you can get one hell of a nice scope. Everyone has their favorite brands. I have a 3-9 x 40 Leupold that's almost 20 years old and wouldn't trade it for anything. I also have a Burris Fullfield II 3-9 x 40 that is fairly new, and is a good scope so far.
The magnification depends on what you are shooting at, and how far away it is. I hunt coyotes, and never get more than a 200 yard shot so 3-9 power fits the bill. If you plan to shoot prairie dogs at 300 + yards or punch paper, go for a 6-18 power. I personally don't like too much magnification.
If I had $600 burning a hole in my pocket and wanted a good "do all" scope, I would probably get a Leupold VX III 4.5-14X 40mm. They go for $579 at bearbasin
