It's definitely not the most powerful gun in the world. At the top of my head, other cartridges that are more powerful than the 44 magnum are the 454casull, 500S&W magnum, and probably many more.

Do you know the price of the 44 magnums that Trust Trade are selling? What brands/models?

no, i think the .454 casull still has bragging rights, but a .44 mag would make a great hunting handgun, you can get a scope mounted to it and hunt wild pig;f

The TV show Shooting USA had featured several firearms a few months back. The S & W 500 came out on top. I don't remember if the 45-70 round was defeated.

If you have to hunt a gorilla or wildebeast, that's the ticket! For the two-legged variety, it's way too much gun that it's beaten by the 45ACP and 357magnum in OSS studies. Too much power for the HP to mushroom properly ;)

at least it was. That info has been outdated by the .454 casull since ithe latters debut. If im gonna get one I'd get a 4 incher and load it with .44 Special for defense. But then again, I dont have use for a .44 magnum so I guess I'll stick with .44 special or .357 magnum. And If i have to carry a handgun almost half as heavy as a light rifle, I'll carry a rifle.

You don't like the .357 magnum or the .45ACP? You going to hunt King Kong?;)

In the Philippine woods setting (unlike in the States where you may encounter some bruins), the most you may need is a good .357 Magnum with proper bullets (Hornady XTP, Speer GD, or preferably Beartooth or gas-checked hardcast). This would be good medicine for wild pigs.

But if you want a .44mag, go for it! Just remember that it's too much for self-defense unless you load it with .44 specials or light magnums. If you just want to shoot paper targets, that's fine, too.

And don't believe the naysayers. You can handle the recoil. Just hold it very firmly but NOT with a death grip. Don't fight the recoil. Also the weight of the Raging Bull with 8" barrel plus its porting should absorb a lot of the recoil. The porting makes it very loud though.

As for carrying when in the woods, a good bandolier holster should do the trick.

This is my Dan Wesson with 6" barrel:

I also have a S&W 629 snubby for home defense loaded with Speer GD for short barrels (light magnums).

The recoil of a 44 magnum is very manageable and the report is a loud boom and not a sharp crack like the lesser calibers. I love my Ruger Super Blackhawk and the grip configuration just makes it a joy to shoot.

Twin Pines sells Hornady while Stronghand has the Winchesters and also sells reloads. I've also bought some Samson IMI's at Marksman MCS.

I remember now, you walk around your hacienda with your Blackhawk holstered.

doctabako is right. My fifteen year old can handle my S&W 629 although he gives it up after a few shots of full power.

The 44 Remington Magnum was the most powerful handgun in the world for a few months end of 1955 and into 1956 when it was topped by the 454 Casull. The 454 is to a 45 Colt what a 44 mag is to a 44 special.

Now, the 500 S&W magnum holds top honors for energy and the 460 VXR holds the crown for top handgun velocity.

my brother-in-law has a .44 mag, i think it is a super blackhawk also, when you load it the cylinders dont come out like a regular revolver, rather there is like this door at the sides that opens and closes, this is where you insert the bullets, one by one, i got to shoot it once, the recoil wasnt as much as i expected cos the gun was so very HEAVY!!!;f

The S&W Model-29 cal.44 Remington Magnum revolver became a by-word among gun aficionados when Clint Eastwood portraying San Francisco Police Inspector Harry Calahan quoted it as the "worlds most powerful handgun..." while convincing a bank robber to surrender in the 1971 hit movie: DIRTY HARRY. At that period it may be correct to say that, but now as of 2005, the S&W cal.500 S&W Magnum holds sway even over the .480 Ruger, .454 Casull, .357 Maximum etc....

If I where an explorer on King Kong's island, I'd carry an IMI Desert Eagle .44 Magnum pistol as a back-up to my Winchester M-70 cal.458 Magnum elephant rifle. ;)

If i were you, i wont buy it. Ammo is very expensive, 80 pesos each, that's the cheapest i suppose. You can't use it for competition, walang reload for 44 magnum ammo unless of course you will use factory ammo. Recoil aspect, lugi ka compared to .357mag. Even for home defense, overkill ang dating, wala naman siguro lulusob sa bahay nyo na kasing laki ni KingKong. But since you already have it.....enjoy it na lang! I presume mayaman ka naman, and you can very well afford to buy those pricey .44mag ammo. Personally, i prefer .357mag in the revolver division.
