I keep a G17 next to my bed for home protection. I am wondering if I should maybe add some nite sites to the gun or just get a good small flash lite and put it next to the gun. I am just looking for some advice in case I had to get up in the middle of the night.

Thanks for the help. I do have a Winchester 12ga in my gun cabinet if needed.

Add the nightsights for carry/ Self defense when not at home and a wepon light for when at home, but use it with a pressure switch so you can just turn it on for a second to ID a target, don't keep it on because it will give your position away if the BG is armed.

I'm not a big fan of add ons on pistols, but I agree that night sights are a must have option on a self defense gun. A small flashlight next to the gun, such a Surefire E2E or G2 is a good thing. If you need to investigate something, it's not a good idea to be pointing a muzzle at it just to turn on a weaponlight and see it's your wife making you coffee in the middle of the night.
I also think gun mounted weapons lights on handguns make it hard to carry, and my sd gun is my carry gun.

I agree that both are required, but I can't help but laugh at the people that tell you you need a non-weapon light so you don't point/illuminate something you don't intend to shoot.
When I lit up my son in the kitchen one night, I immediately pointed the gun at the ceiling for indirect illunination. I then removed it from the gun (remember that cute accessory rail with the easy-on? It goes easy-off, too). I then used my M3 weapon light as a simple hand-held flashlight to find out WTF was going on. (Turns out it wasn't my son after all, but a shadow I thought was my son). Either way, the weapon-mounted light worked fine.
I also can't underemphasize the importance of night sites. Mbrooks had it right in that the NS allow you to aim accurately in low light whereas a white light makes YOU a target in addition to illuminating your threat. Where target ID is not an issue, often the NS are all you need and SIGNIFICANTLY aid in accuracy of fire.

I am getting ready to get some nite sights and I think I will go with a small Surefire light.

With a gun mounted surefire you cant holster the gun.
I do agree with the night sights.

Yup. Looks like I have to go out and get me some Tru-Glos... ;Q
I have the factory night sights and the light also from Glock on my sd gun. The night sights are great to have for a silloett situation. Use the light just before you may have to shoot.

The flashbang effect. Same thing I always had in mind...

The one outstanding characteristic of Surefire weapon lights is the ability to slap a 120 lumen bulb in it. I'm not aware of another tac-light that offers this level of brightness. Of course now everyone is going to LED's so my P101 will be an antique soon. :)
