Here is the description:

Dell laptop, Pentium M 1.3GHz, 384mb RAM, 25gb harddrive.

The computer still has about 10gigs of free harddrive space, it is spyware free, and there are few if any unneccesary/unwanted startup programs. However, there are MANY programs installed on this computer... the Start Menu/Programs list is 3 columns long. It is an accountant's computer, and most of the programs are all accounting type software.

The computer takes an extremely long time to start up. Not only does it take a long time to load programs at startup, it takes a long time to even get to the windows log on screen.

What can be done to speed this computer up? I'd like to hear some ideas that don't involve re-formatting the drive, simply because of the sheer number of programs involved and the probable lack of their install discs.

Thanks for any help.

Try cleaning the registry with this:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/WT_RegCleanerXP_d3560.html

and the rest of the hard drive with this:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_d4191.html

This will help a little.

edited to add: You might also try adding more RAM if this is an option. A lot of those programs are probably using up most of the available memory you have.

Usually the best thing to do is a clean install.

Get rid of everything you can that loads at startup.

Delete the pagefile and then defrag the drive after getting rid of bogus files.

Set the pagefile manually to 1GB

More RAM

Plug it in. (rather than battery)
