What companies are the most popular when building your own AR? I plan to get a RRA stripped. That is as far as I have gotten. What about uppers and the other parts? I have about $115 into the stripped reciever if I get the one I want. I would like to keep this gun as cheap as possible just to get started ($500-$650). I will upgrade (maybe) in the future.
Oh yeah if it is not painfully obvious I am new to this whole process.

CMT makes a great LPK, so does RRA.
For the best bang for your buck LPK, get a DPMS. It will run you about $50 give or take. They are well made and the single stage triggers they make are actually quite nice for a single stage (feels much nicer than my RRA LPK's, and *almost* as nice as a two stage).
Check the AR15.com equipment exchange.

The only build I have conducted was with a DPMS parts kit and everything went very smooth. It's one of the more affordable kits and as Gorelicks has explained, I have read allot of good things about the trigger and echo those sediments

If you have a RR lower, get the RR lower parts kit. It is a little more than the cheaper kits, but you are getting RR quality. Then get the RR complete upper so you will out shooting instead of having problems. Plus you will have a lifetime warranty on the upper. Why build a frankenstein gun when the savings are so small. Of course this is just my way thinking and I realize others may think differently.
