Does anyone have excpeirience with the reletively new P22. It comes with both a 3.5" barrel and a 5.5" barrel plus a "slide extender" that attaches to the longer barrel and lookes like a compensator but the 5.5" barrel is not ported so the compensator is for looks only.
Has ony shot this gun? How good is it?
Does it require a "break-in-period" before it reliably fires 22LRs?
Is it finicky about which brand or type of 22lr it requires to cycle properly?
I am considering buying it for my children to learn to shoot a pistol with (using the 5.5" barrel). Since it has all the safeties of a tyupical pistol I thought it would be a good trainer.
Any other info would be helpful!
Thank you all! Brian

You need to visit RimfireCentral.com There's a Walther forum with about fifty pages of threads.
Reader's Digest condensed version as follows:
1. Shoot high velocity, copper coated rounds. Slide won't cycle on std. vel. and gun will foul quickly on lead rounds.
2. Find which ammo. works well in your gun. Most people like CCI MiniMags.
3. Gun does need about 500 rounds to break in.
4. Gun has a zinc slide. DON'T lube up like a 1911 or bye bye slide.
Important to read lube tips at RFC.
5. Barrel nut and stove bolts need to be tightened up. Most people agree on Blue LocTite as the fix.
6. After you remove the slide for cleaning, go to RFC and search "secret handshake" for directions on re-installing the slide. Installation is NOT the reverse of disassembly, regardless of what the manual says.
The little gun does a good job for a $250. semiautomatic. It's no Smith and Wesson 41 ... but it's not $1000. either.
BTW: if you have problems, search at RFC. Pretty much everything you can imagine has been addressed before.
It makes a great gun for new shooters, plinking, and range time without spending much $$.
Have fun and be safe

thnx ATI. Another forum to read, and less work gettin' dun'
I bought mine about 3 or 4 months ago. I have tried all sorts of .22lr ammo and it has been 100% reliable with everything. I've tried at least 10 different brands/types of ammo from Remington SUBSONICS to CCI Stingers. I can't put my finger on it, but this is a super fun gun to shoot even though accuracy is in the fair to good range. I'm very pleased with mine.
Here's just some of the ammo I've tried:

Typical accuracy @ 20-25 yards:

I am on my third P22 right now. I traded the first two and regreted letting them both go so I picked up a new last week. I took it to the range for the first time yesterday. I took 350 rounds of CCI stingers and 100 rounds of Remington yellow jackets. In the first 50 rounds of stingers I had 5 rounds that I had to hit twice before they went off. The next 300 rounds went off without a hitch. This gun does not like yellow jackets. I had a bunch FTF's but I expected that with the yellow jackets. The other two P22 I had both had thousands of rounds through them with no problems after a short break-in-period. I mostly shoot CCI stingers or Mini mags but I will also use Remington bulk packs from time to time. They are great guns and a blast to shoot.

Michael, Said:
"... (the Walther p22 22lr is) butt ugly and couldn't give me one. Their are much better 22 to be had."
Mike, I have been told that there are better 22lr pistols out there such as the Ruger "Mark I, II, III series.
Michael, Just in case someone does offer you a free Walther P22, please accept it and pass it along to me. I would gladly accept one as I do find it an intreguing pistol and a pleasant looking design.
Merry Christmas, Brian

I bought one for a couple of weeks ago for my my GF to use. I have only tried Stingers and Golden Bullets but both work great. I'll be sticking with the Remingtons because they are only $9.50 for 525rds locally vs the CCI's which are $3.50 for 100. I haven't had one problem at all with it. I am lucky though because I have three guns that I always hear are garbage, etc. but have never had any problems with any of them. Just pick the right ammo and hold it like a man and all will be well. At least with the newer models.
