Framing X-Ring with Dawson FO???

I put Dawson FO/Adjustable sights on my 34 and have a question about aiming with this setup. Do you aim using the top of the front sight or do you want to center the bullseye using the red FO dot??

Also, the sight didn't come with any information as to how much change you get to the POI per click on the windage and elevation screws. I went to the range today and had alot of difficulty with these new sights. First adjustment was way off and secondly, I have never shot from a rest before. Seems my freehand groups with the stock sights at 15 yds were better than what I got from the rest at 25 yds with the DPs. Any thoughts??

I use the dawson FO front and bo-mar rear, and I center the dot in the rear notch and level with the top of the rear sights, then place the dot where I want to hit.

Maybe it's not supposed to be like that, but it makes the gun feel more like a red-dot to me, and helps with my transition from open to iron sights.
