As the title says I have $650 to build my upper. It has to have rails, and be free floated for all the junk I'll mount later. Not sure what barrel to go with must be 16 inches and up. Haven't decided on twist, 1/7 or 1/9 I will be using 55 grain ammo most of the time. I have been thinking about the 18 SPR barrel from CMMG, http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=229943&cat=41& .
Anyways please help me spend my money.
Thanks,
Darkside

At $525, you won't have much for the FF. Yer probably looking at a YHM rail at taht point, I think. Not that that's a BAD thing (Hey Silver!) But at $650, yer buyin trade-offs. You can downgrade to a Eagle firearms upper and get a better rail. Welcome to the quandry. LOL

You can get the Rock River DEA upper half for $654 shipped from a dealer at the email legaltranfers@att.net -- I considered this option, but it has a heavy barrel and I wanted a lighter govt profile.
16” RRA DEA Upper Half w/ GGG sights / Surefire rails $ 654 shipped to your door

What are you going to use this rifle for?
3 Gun?
Iraq?
Plinking?
LEO?
You can get a eagle 16" chrome lined 16 upper. They are $399 - $429 depending on if you want a pencil barrel or Heavy barrel. That leaves you over $200 for a FF rail system.
My AR came with a FF rail system, and while I like it, dads non free floater works just as well.
Personally I dont think FF is that big of a deal, but thats your call.

This rifle was for 3 gun and plinking.
Please don't take this the wrong way, just my observation.
Well if its just for 3 gun and plinking, why would you want to hang a bunch of junk on it. For 3 gun all you really need is a a good muzzle brake, vertical grip ( if thats your thing ), and a good optical sight.
IMO, no need to hang lights and laser and other useless junk on your rifle unless you need it.
I htink you would probably be happy with a cheaper set of non free floating gurad that simple replace your handguards. They are under $100. First Samco makes a good set. I have 2 sets of those on my AR's. They work great.

Get an upper of your choice from Eagle Firearms, either the ones they build, a RRA, or Stag. Then buy a good set of railed handguards (YHM, MI, Surefire). You don't need FF for plinking and 3 gun. You could do this easily with $625.

I am considering using the following parts on my AR project:
Vortex Flash Hider
Wilson Combat 16 in. Match barrel (same as the one on Wilson's UT Carbine)
GG&G Tactical Modular Flip Up Front Sight
KAC Railed Interface System
Bushmaster Upper receiver with A3 Railed Upper and Bolt carrier Assy.
GG&G MAD Flip Up Rear Sight
Hopefully, I will have the lower on Monday from a gun maker in Apopka; once that's on my side, then is off to the gun shows to build my carbine. Once I have it assembled, I will post pics here.
STAY TUNED ;f
