View Full Version : Windows 2000
Could someone explain to me what you would use Windows 2000 for? Thanks
I may not speak for everyone on GT, but I've heard it can be used as an operating system ;) .
We use 2000 Pro at work as it's pretty reliable and is easily joined to a domain.
Windows 2000 is just that an operating system, way more realible and secure than 98, as long as you use the NTFS file system. It was built off of Windows NT, it works well in a networked environment or for stand alone use such as at home.
Myself I love it both of my computers have it installed, I never did care for XP thus I remained with 2000 pro.
Windows XP was built off of the 2000 platform basicly XP is a "hopped up" version of 2000 in my eyes. Microsoft added some wizards and new a few new features to XP to make it more user friendly.
WINDOWS TWO THOUSAND? It's 2006 now people. That stuff is 6 years old. Ya'll need to get with the times!
In the beginning was DOS.
Windows 1.0 - 3.0 ran on top of DOS
Windows 3.0 - Me ran on top of DOS, in protected mode.
Soon after Windows 3.0 came out, Windows 3.5 was released (aka Windows NT), circa 1993. It did not run on DOS, but in protected mode, with a much more stable foundation (kernel). Bill looked upon it, and said, yea, it is good. So good, in fact, I'll only sell it to businessess, and at twice the price of regular windows, which shall be regulated to mere mortals.
More versions of NT came out, labelled Windows NT 3.51, 4.0, and then 2000.
Windows Me, the last of the old and busted-down-ness, was released around the same time as Windows 2000. It was to be the last consumer operating systems built on top of DOS, before the OS's were merged.
And then what we had all hoped for finally happened. Windows XP, more the successor to 2000 than Me, was released, superceeding both DOS-based OS's, as well as NT.
DOS 1.0 - Late 70's
Windows 1.0 - Mid 80's
Windows 3.0 - Early 90's
Windows NT 3.5x - Early 90's
Windows 95 - 1996
Windows NT 4.0 - 1997
Windows 98 - 1998
Windows Me - 2000
Windows 2000 (NT moniker dropped) - 2000
Windows XP - 2001

Thanks Nyper, you were so helpful. I guess history doesn't interest you since it deals with the past. I guess It's true that there's one in every crowd. ;Q
But for the rest of you that were helpful I had read somewhere that someone used Windows 2000 because it worked well for the games that they played on their computer.
I have a grandson and that is basically what he does with the computer I built him and not knowing anything about Windows 2000 I just wanted opinions from those of you that are much more knowledgeable than myself. Thanks again
Windows 2k is a basic operating system. Its more geared for office applications and workstation use. Its stable, albeit outdated. There are many patches and hotfixes that need to be installed to bring it to current standards.
XP is a much better choice for the home user. It is more compatible with newer software and hardware. Microsoft has stopped engineering for 2000 based systems anyway so support for those systems is goig to be harder to come by.
