Hi kids,

I was told by epsylum that I had to come here and post, so here it is. ;)

I'm the proud owner of a SS Ruger Vaquero in .45 LC, 4-5/8" barrel, purchased new in 1999. I'm not a Cowboy Action shooter, so I just plink with it mostly. Still, it's the most joyful handgun I've ever owned.

About 2 years ago I swapped the white, simulated ivory grips for a pair of fancy-lookin', engraved metal grips in gold with black accents. They look real nice, but it's not as smooth in the hand under recoil as it was before. The .45 LC isn't a monster in turns of felt recoil though, so it's tolerable. Still, I think I'll switch to those black pearl-looking grips before long.

Other than the grips, my Vaquero is bone stock. Cleaned regularly with Butch's Bore Shine and Kroil. This is the only Ruger I currently own, but I'd love to buy a "Bird's Head" Single-Six in .32 H&R.

Fortunately, I had the priviledge of growing up around guns and hunting. I currently own a couple rifles, a S&W .38 Special DA, and two shotguns. Two years ago I sold my SAR-1 (AK-47) with synthetic stock, a S&W Model 5911, and my Savage FP-10 with Vari-X III so that my son and I could buy dirtbikes. I *really* miss that heavy-barrel Savage... it was a tackdriver. Ahhh well, one of these days I'll replace it. Anyway, nice to find this place. And nice to be welcome. :)

Howdy again.

If you have pics of your Ruger, there is also a Ruger pic thread.

I also have a Ruger single action (Super Blackhawk in .44mag). Have you done the trigger trick yet or do you prefer the stock trigger weight?

BTW don't worry about the whole "I don't own a glock" thing. There are some people who post here who don't even own a gun yet. It doesn't matter. Just chime in if you feel you have something to add.

and

I believe I do indeed have a photo on my system somewhere... I'll post it if I can find it. Thanks for the link!

And thanks for the welcome, guys!

Well, I hadn't thought about the trigger specifically, but I *was* hoping to get the cylinder/action tuned up one of these days. It's okay as-is, but I've read that a good SA 'smith can really smooth things up. Are there aftermarket triggers for the Ruger SA that make a big difference all by themselves? And if so, can the average enthusiast install 'em?

I did the Timney trigger on my Savage and glass-bedded a Mauser action in a new thumbhole stock, so I'm not totally inept at minor mods. But if it requires a lathe, specialized tools or certificate from NASA... then I'm out.

PS--My brother has the Ruger Redhawk in .44mag. That thing is just obnoxious. ;) I don't think you even have to actually hit anything with it... just the concussion will scare them to death. I couldn't even imagine that new S&W 500.

The trigger trick I am speaking of is also referred to as the "poor boy's trigger job".

Step 1: Take off 1 grip panel (doesn't matter which one)
Step 2: disconnect one side of the trigger spring that is now exposed.
Step 3: Put grip back on.

Takes 30 seconds and requires a screw driver (to remove grip) and a set of pliers (to disconnect the spring).

It cuts the trigger pull in about half.

Better intructions.

Both my Dad and I have done it to our's. I don't want to go back to stock.

Ahhh, excellent! I hadn't heard of that. It works with Vaqueros too,eh? Sounds simple enough to try anyway. And I assume a fellow could always re-apply the spring if desired, huh? I'll give this a try and report back on my results the next time I get out to shoot (which may be a while). Thanks epsylum.

Looks like a Vaquero in the article, so I am assuiming it works on them.

Yes, you can just re apply the spring if you don't like it.

Why aren't all triggers this easy to modify? ;f
