View Full Version : Anyone hunting with a pellet rifle?
Just curious what you find best for small game. Im looking at a gamo 1000 fps .177 pellet rifle for doves, maybe a few other small game animals closer to the city where I dont want to use a rimfire or shotgun.
It is the defacto airgun forum. You will find quite a few hunters using air guns.
I have a break barrel .22 caliber model, velocity is about 800 fps. It is very effective on all manner of creatures up to Rabbits, I have never needed a follow up shot on anything I have hit. I would recommend a .22 instead of a .177.
so a .22 at 800 is better than the .177 at 1000? I was wondering about that
if you look at some average pellet weights here is what you are looking at...
if the .177 pellet is a weight of 9 grains its muzzle energy at 1000 FPS is going to be roughly 19.9 FPE
if the .22 pellet is a weight of 14 grains its muzzle energy at 800 FPS is going to be roughly 19.8 FPE
Keep in mind that the head size is larger on the .22 so there may be a slight advantage there. Also, pellet weight varies widely depending on what pellet you want to hunt with. You can shoot an 18 grain .22 pellet and get 25 FPE.

and if you go here...
