View Full Version : S & W 610 back? kn38ms 01-13-2006, 09:38 Will the folks @ Smitty reintroduce this bad boy at this years Shot show. Please ;a hartzpad 01-13-2006, 10:27 Thanks for getting my hopes up! Just when I had given up hope of getting a new 610. We can hope, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Bullman 01-13-2006, 21:22 I recently heard on a thread in here that the 10mm is like a bad word at Smith and Wesson. klmmicro 01-14-2006, 08:59 Originally posted by Bullman I recently heard on a thread in here that the 10mm is like a bad word at Smith and Wesson. Maybe we could get them to produce a "640" with a long cylinder? Because they already have the tooling for the 610 cyl, they don't even have to change all that much. Just stamp in .40SW and call it good... ILikeFtLbs 01-15-2006, 14:54 What about a 10mm 1911? They have the .45 and the .38 Super. Whenever I mention 10mm to them they kinda go, "eh? Yea I guess that'd be neat, but I don't know." Danny Reid 01-15-2006, 15:22 I think the 610 is gone for good. S&W, if they ever do another 10mm at all, I think would be much more likely to do a 1911 type or maybe bring back the 1006. I used to own two 610s, one had the 6" barrel, the other was a Lew Horton edition that had a 3" barrel. Both were excellent shooters. The problem with the 610 is that it really is a novelty gun, and apart from collectors and die-hard 10mm aficianados...it just doesn't have much appeal. At least not enough, to warrant S&Ws continued production. Mine were really neat guns. I sold them when I was in a bit of a difficult financial situation. I figured that I already more than had all the revolver bases covered with my 357 magnums and 44 magnums, so the 10mms went bye-bye. kn38ms 01-15-2006, 17:45 Originally posted by Danny Reid I think the 610 is gone for good. No matter how much we dig the 10mm, if it does not create profit, they won't make it. Danny Reid 01-15-2006, 21:35 Ditto. I hate to see it go, too. But I certainly don't blame S&W from a business standpoint. What's the point of a 10mm revolver anyway? I can definitely appreciate the desire of 10mm fans to have a revolver. But really...from a practical standpoint...a 357 Magnum revolver duplicates a 10mm's performance. And both the 41 Magnum and the 44 Magnum leave the 10mm in the dust. And the 460 and the 500? Well...that's a WHOLE different story altogether!;) 10mm4ever 01-16-2006, 00:58 Originally posted by Danny Reid Ditto. I hate to see it go, too. Or better yet, what's the point in a .44 mag desert eagle, when you could get a revolver? Some folks like to have most, if not all of their handguns in the same caliber. Well...that's a WHOLE different story altogether!;) I haven't surveyed every possible loading for .357 Magnum, but most .357 mag loads top out at 180 grains. I think you can load some of the few 200 grain bullets, but you have a COL problem on a lot of guns. Also, 10mm will pack more of a punch, usually around 10-20% more muzzle energy than .357s, at least per the quick survey I did of the offerings @ DoubleTap and Winchster. Originally posted by 10mm4ever Or better yet, what's the point in a .44 mag desert eagle, when you could get a revolver? Less recoil. The gas action on Desert Eagles (and the mass) does an awful lot of recoil absorbtion. I've fired factory loaded 155 grain Hornady XTPs from my 1006 and 44 Mags from a Desert Eagle back-back, and the 10mm load actually had more felt recoil. I want to know what the point of the .460 is, beyond "because we can." There's a point at which they're just making up new rifle cartridges for handguns, IMHO. KB4IFS 01-16-2006, 19:55 Funny, I shoot both a S&W 460 XVR PC and a S&W 610 6.5".;f swampmaster 01-16-2006, 21:01 Hmmm I have been wondering what 10mm to get rid of jsut so I can get the 460 G20man32904 01-16-2006, 21:02 Originally posted by mobocracy I want to know what the point of the .460 is, beyond "because we can." All this aside, I agree, its because we can, and its dang fun!! ;f ;I ;c Bullman 01-16-2006, 21:44 Originally posted by swampmaster Hmmm I have been wondering what 10mm to get rid of jsut so I can get the 460 Got a 610 you can part with?;f kn38ms 01-17-2006, 04:16 Originally posted by Bullman Got a 610 you can part with?;f Me first there BM! swampmaster 01-17-2006, 04:36 No I just picked up a NIB 6 1/2 inch to put in the safe man these are high priced now I gave 550.00 out the door I knopw its not bad but not great either.
