softening the nose of a lead bullets

My BearTooth bullet technical guide list a method to anneal a nose of a hc bullet to reduce it's hardness. Can a regular propane torch kit from a homedepot do this? also will the lube still melt out of the lube groove if I have the bullet in a pan of water?

Not sure on this so asking for experience from people who have actually done this?

I was planning on sitting the bullet in a pan of water up to and equal to the drive band and then heating the nose of the bullet and then let it cool. This way I have a softer nose to help deformation when I shoot it at my intended game animal.

It isn't a matter of work-hardening, which annealing will fix by relaxing the bonds in the metal's crystal matrix, but a matter of the slug's composition that normally determines hardness.

They aren't hard because of any sort of heat treatment but rather because of the ratio of tin to lead in the alloy.

Maybe BearTooth bullets use some sort of semi-exotic alloy that is baked and quenched to harden them, but that seems unlikely.

This is odd. Oh, well...as long as you don't melt 'em until they deform, what harm could it do?

BTW, I think your lube is going to sag in the grooves at the very least regardless of the waterbath heatsink thing. I may be mistaken.
