Need one for a project 40 to 10mm switch that I can use with Ed Brown's Bobtail MSH. I could do a Para P16-40 but the bobtail won't work. I would get a DW bobber, but I heard they have not hit the market and are hard to come by. Trying to go the cheaper route. I have seem a couple Government size 40's but no commanders. Do they simply not exist?
Worst case senario I say "F" it and build a Capsian (tempting), which I have priced out at $952 so far w/o MSH and cutting for bobtail, barrel and bushing, springs, final fitting, and sight cuts. I would like to get the Beehive checkering from Blue Creek Tool on the front strap, MSH, and slide but they want $475 for all three!! Yikes, I guess I don't need it that much. Sheesh!
Or could I get a 45 commander and get a 10mm slide? The frames are the same right? Just the slide and stuff is different?

Sti makes a lot of Single Stacks chambered in .40.

Then again, doesn't Dan Wesson make a 10mm? Wouldn't it be easier just to get one of those?

Yeah, I'd like to get the DW bobber. Reports are they aren't on the shelves yet. The pre-CZ bobbers are out there but nobody wants to sell.
A ream and spring change on a .40 commander would be lots cheaper. Trying to do this on a limited budget. I plan on running Double Tap Ammo only.

I read the above report from paul45 about the Kimber converted, honestly I thought that was a good build! I almost want to try that one out!
Kimber makes a .40S&W Pro Carry.

Yes, that caught my eye too. Thanks paul45. I was leaning towards the Commander size because I was looking to retain draw speed. I carried a G30 (3.78" bbl) and loved the draw speed the shorter barrel gave me. I was thinking a 4.25" wouldn't be that much longer to clear leather (or kydex) and I could adapt my drawing to the gun and even the Government is only .75" longer than the Commander. I could even do that too.
I just like that the Commander's usually have no forward serrations, which bug me and IMO look gawdy. I leave my carry gun loaded ALL the time, unless I am cleaning it or traveling to WI, which I have to unload and disarm. So there is no need to press check and the very few times I did for grins, my smooth G30 gave me no trouble at all. Pinch and push.
The height of the Gov. and Comm. are the same, this is good for concealment, being only 5-10 145#. The 1911 is only 1.3" taller than the Glock 30 and with the bobber MSH, will be even more concealable. Any length of barrel is of no consequence for concealment, since I carry IWB. It just matters in draw time, ie longer barrel little more time to clear the holster. Even though it may be fractions of a second, it is fractions of seconds that I would like to be in my favor in case I need them. I might try and do the Government thing instead, we'll see when I get some money together.
Kimber uses a lot of MIM parts for the small stuff right? If that's the case and I use a Kimber, I think I would like to change all the internals to Brown or get Caspian's kit. I just don't trust MIM.
go check on gunbroker for a dan wesson bobtail... DW/CZ-USA is selling "seconds" over there...essentially guns that have some sort of cosmetic issue...for example, I just bought a brand new C-BOB over there with a slight scratch on the front dust cover...i cant even see it on the pictures...
at any rate, i paid significantly less than the MSRP or what you can get one for new...and it comes from the factory, with the warranty, etc...
i will carry it anyway, so a scratch on the front left dust cover bothers me none...
oh, and the new ones have an internal extractor

Saw those too. BIN was like $750 or so. 45s were all I saw.
I think I going to go with a Para P16-40 converted to 10mm. I have to sell some stuff and try to track down a used one. Might be a couple months for it to be done, but it will be worth it. I don't think the Para is any thicker than a Glock, if much at all.
