I have a few questions about a Remingotn 700 build I am starting and would appreciate any suggstions.
I am rebarreling a 700 to 7mm UltraMag using a Remington SS barrel that is a new take off from another rifle, standard magnum contour. Ths rifle is my first 700, I've previously built only Mausers.
I am planning to replace the recoil lug with a thicker surface ground one and am considering using one .250 thick one to avoid taking too much off of the barrels shoulder (the barrel has very lttle distance from the shoulder till the start of the taper). Will this lug be thick enough to provide significant improvement over a stock lug? Also, is the straight sided or tapered lug of any significance other than bedding considerations?
Are the remington chambers cut well enough for accuracy or would I do better to set the barrel back enough to recut the chamber a bit?
I plan on truing the receiver face: would a tight fitting mandrel held with a lock screw in the bolt chanel or a mandrel threaded to the receiver threads be preferred or does it make any difference? Also is there any accepted standard for how much of a cut to make on the face or should it just be cut to the minimum to produce an even surface?
I'm not planning on recutting the receiver threads on this one since I already have a barrel threaded for standard size, but I am considering making a very small pass, .001 or so, to even up the thread faces. Is this a good idea or would it make the thread fit too sloppy? Does anyone know a technique for measuring thread concentricity to determine if there will be any real benefit to a particular reciver to recut the thread to an oversize? What would be the most accepted oversize to cut?
This action has a magnum bolt, but I am curious as to whether a standard bolt could be opened up to a magnum face and what it would entail. Also, if anyone has ever installed a Sako type extractor, what needs to be watched most closely to avoid ruining a bolt (I don't plan to do this, but would like to know for future reference).
Finally, I am using a Richards stock in their ultra light laminate. Don't have the stock yet but it looks a bit unimpressive on the website picture and am wondering if anyone has used this laminate yet, how they finished it, and what it looked like finished?
