View Full Version : Bad day at the range.....
Well, I had my first ever Glock problem (I've been shooting them since 1998). I have never had a failure of any of my Glocks or Glocks I have fired to go boom when I pulled the trigger.
On 2 seperate occasions I had a failure to extract. My G20 would have the slide to the rear attempting to chamber a new round with the casing from the last halfway out of the chamber. I was only using one magazine.
Bummer!
The first failure I chalked up to the fact I was wearing gloves. The second time I was not!
So, either my G20 is not 100% happy with UMC stuff or I have a bad magazine.
It was simply too cold for me to fully troubleshoot the failure (22F with bad winds).
As an FYI, my single box of PMC 10A ammo all fed with no issues. Again I was using only one mag, but I do not have identifying marks to differentiate them (yet).
Weak magspring?
Limpwrist from glove?
Sorry man, what lube are you using?

Nah, the magspring is good. I thought the glove causing a limpwrist was possible, but I was also firing my G34 and had zero malfunctions. Plus the failure occured with and without the glove.

Still on the Glock copper based lube. As of today the weapon only has 90 rounds down range. It would have been 140 total, but as I said the temperature was playing into the "fun" aspect. I usually don't clean my pistols until I reach the 300 round mark.
Thinking back on the failure, I seem to remember that the spent casing's rim was butted up againt the lip of the round in the mag.
I'll need to keep an eye on mags and keep a closer eye on the exact failure point.
When I got my Glock 20 I also purchased 3 extra mags to go with it (6 total). I got an assortment of semi custom ammo for testing and went to town. I will not buy a handgun outside of a revolver for hunting I will not carry on duty or off duty.
For duty purposes I normally like to run 1,000rds without a malfunction prior to carry. I thought it was the Lancer Ammo causing the issues that I had which were exactly what you are having but it was actually one of my mags. It is going back to the factory and I am getting a new one for free. The last outing I had I ran about 500rds of which about 200rds were Double Tap 165gr and 180gr Gold Dot HPs and about 30rds of the 135gr loading.
The rest where the full power loads from GA and practice loads from Lancer Ammo. Getting close to 2000rds without a problem. I think the Glock 20 and I both love the DT ammo the best!

I still have yet to do so, but I told you guys awhile back that I had many many fail to chamber when using the +2 extensions. The solution I was told, was to use the Wolf springs, which put more pressure on the rounds to want to exit the mag more reliably. My advice? More pressure in the magazine certainly cannot hurt, and I use high temp grease on the points the GLOCK manual says to, and on the barrel. And the ammo has lots to do with it too. I picked up 800 rounds of poopy reloads at a gun show for 100$ and this stuff probably greatly contributed to the failures I was experiencing when going for the whole 18rnd range practice. This should fix it all, and if not I dont know what to say:
-Wolf Springs
-high-temp grease consistent with the manual, do the barrel good too
-medium to high quality ammo, use your self defense stuff too
-proper shooting technique
Whoa, once you hit brain surgery you usually have gone too far!:)
There are too many variables right now to make any sort of diagnosis. I have less than 100 rounds through the weapon and on each outing I only used 1 magazine. I did use 2 different types of ammo (1st PMC 10A, 2nd UMC 180).
I had zero failures with the PMC, 2 with the UMC. I do not know if I used the same mag each time.
From my limited diagnosis I do know that the slide had enough power behind it to cause the extractor to jump the rim of the fired casing, continue fully to the rear and attempt to chamber the next round.n Each time there were only 2 rounds left in the mag.
So, until I can test each mag I really don't know if the mag is the issue or the ammo.
From spcwes, I gather that I have one bad mag. I cannot be sure until I use both side-by-side.
Hopefully I'll have a report this weekend.

My Glock 29 hates UMC loads. It works fine in my 20 but not in my 29. My G29 works with all other ammo. Go figure??

My G34 does the same thing with UMC115Gr.

First, you need to be a good Marine and get your a** to the range more. Only 90 rds down range? Come on, don't let a filthy Sailor like me chalk up more range time than a Marine!
Anyway, so the slide is locked to the rear with the fired case lodged in the chamber? If so, it seems like the extractor isn't doing it's job. You should detail strip the slide and make sure the spring that pushes the extractor isn't all gunked up (I don't see how it could be with only 90 rds thru it). The GLOCK isn't like the Beretta. You don't need to just fill every crevice with oil. Let us know how it goes.
