View Full Version : Duracoat (or refinish) pics
I was thinking about Duracoating my 2nd gen g17. Any of you who have experience with duracoat, would you post a pic or share your experience with it on a glock or any weapon. Thanks.
I haven't had it done yet personally, but will be doing my slide & magwell. I have on the other hand personally seen some guns that had their slides Duracoated and, properly done, it's very nice - and lots of colors to choose from. See the website at Lauer Custom (http://www.lauerweaponry.com/duracoatcolors.cfm?colortype=stock&Category=220) for colors. If I wasn't into picking up their starter kit (airbrush and all) to work on some other projects myself I think just sending an old holster-worn slide out to CCR (http://ccr-refinishing.com/) for the little he charges would be just the ticket to renew an old Glock. Sample pics there and results I've seen are similar to what CCR provides.
FWIW, Steve just up the road at Lauer (home of Duracoat) assures me that unless you're an out & out idiot it is quite feasible (and the instructions are sufficient) to re-do a slide yourself and the starter kits come with enough of your chosen color to do several guns. You may want to give them both a call, depending on what you want.
:)
Edit: and I could be wrong but I believe it was "Lose that nickel-plated sissy pistol...."
Thanks for the info...I think I'm going to give it a try on my next day off. And thanks for the heads up on the mis-quote.
Oh, yeah, in case you're doing it yourself. Unless you can get it out undamaged, you'll need to acquire a new firing pin channel liner 'cause that needs to be out during the process. I'm told you can sometimes (depending on how gunked up it is) get it out successfully by rapping the muzzle end of the open-stripped slide with a neoprene mallet while the back end with the slide-cover plate is off rests against a piece of soft pine. Other times the FP channel liner is toasted during the extraction process.
If having it done offsite, contact who's doing it - sometimes they have them, sometimes they want you to furnish them. Couple of bucks.
Best of luck. ;f
Wig19,
I very rarely use Duracoat on slides. I find it is best on polymers and plastics there are much better finishes for metal
