I just purchased a Maverick 88 shotgun less than a month ago and here's the problem...I was firing Winchester Universal 7.5 shot ammo and had no problems at first until about the second time I used the gun I chambered a round, turned off the safety, pulled the trigger, heard a click but the round didn't go off...my first thought was bad ammo, but after examining the shell i noticed the primer had not been struck by the firing pin...I chambered another round and it fired...and continued to fire until I had the same problem again numerous times, sometimes the gun would fire, then it wouldn't....I took the gun apart cleaned and lubricated it...put it back together..and put 25 rounds through it without a hitch...the gun sat for about a month until today when i pulled it out and went through 8 shells and only two fired...none of the primers were struck on these shells either...I checked the firing pin, it's not broken as far as i can tell...anybody else had this problem or have any ideas before i send it in for service....i know this is a cheaper made gun but the internal parts are identical to the mossberg 500 i own that i have had no problems with...Thanks in advance...

Try tightening up the barrel. I had the same problem, a click instead of a bang and no marks on the primers. I was ready to smash the thing until I realized that the barrel would start to come loose after shooting for a while. Don't be afraid to crank down on the barrel screw(using hands, not tools).

I'll try that...yeh i've came close to tossing the damn thing into the woods a couple of times..thanks
What NycMarine said. The Mav 88 is a decent little gun, one of the best values IMO for a cheap house gun. Don't toss it in the woods till you've isolated the problem. Better than 50:50 the barrel isn't seated all the way back. Try his fix & let us know. :)

I'm in Lake city if you can't get it working I'll fix it for $30.00 + parts or buy it for $100.00 as is.

appreciate it guys...Got a feeling it's gonna be the barrel..I know a little about guns and my dad's retired swat so he's been around them forever...we've checked everything we can think of but the barrel not being tight enough didn't even cross our minds...my first thought was the firing pin being broken which would have solved the mystery...I'll try it this weekend and let you'll know...and i'll keep your offer in mind FHP...you ride in duval or baker...or do you really work for FHP?

Well I tried tightening the barrel..Either sending it back or taking FHP's offer.

After some tinkering I thought I had the problem beat. It fired every time when the muzzle was pointed down but failed to fire when parallel to the ground. It sounded like a few people had an idea what the problem is. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

I'm completely lost...how long have you had your gun?

The gun was giving to me 4 months ago by my father who bought it 2 years before that. He never fired it and thought I would get more use out of it. After my first trip to the range I noticed the same problem as you where having. I think the problem is with the follower from the trigger to the sear. I think the spring that raises the follower was out of position which caused the sear to catch on half cock. I took the whole trigger assembly apart and after some frustration I got it back together. I need to go test it to confirm my fix. How did you fix your gun?

I had a roommate with the same gun, and same problem. Right after he bought it, took it out to the range and damn thing wouldn't go boom. Turned out to be a broken firing pin. Hint: don't dry fire it. That's what broke his.
fhp490: does the Ft. White Gun Club still exist? I was a member my last year up at UF and liked to shoot there for the 6 months I was a member, might join again if I get accepted and move back up there for grad school. Closer to G-ville than the ONF, and less crowded.
Good luck with the broken shotties guys, and keep us posted. Either of you disassemble them yet to check for broken FP?

So after much effort I noticed that the hammer was getting stuck on the lip of the half cock area. I removed the hammer and then ground off the half cock. It has now functioned every time. I didn’t want to do this but I saw no other way.

Guess I'll try that or just send the thing back..Kinda fed up with it now.

After taking it out to the range it functioned 100%. This fix took about five minutes and was easy. All I did was remove the pin in the rear which holds the main spring and removed the pin that holds the hammer. Used a grinding wheel and removed the half cock lip. It feels really good to have a weapon that goes boom when I pull the trigger.
