View Full Version : Best Inexpensive AK Clone?
Hello all--
Well, now that I have an SKS I am reloading the 7.62x39mm cartridge, to very good effect.
However I can see that there are times I won't need the accuracy (of the length and weight) of my Yugo. For those times a sweet little AK would likely fill the bill perfectly.
The question is, how to acquire one of these on the cheap?
I have seen the kits, and although I have quite a bit of experience with metalworking I believe you need a good bench vise and a few other tools to build up an AK from the receiver.
I really don't have the space here for that, anyway.
Locally, the only AK cloke I have seen was a WASR10 for $400, and it was USED.
I see them on the web for less but neither of the local FFL's will do a transfer for their customers. They can order it for you, but you can't find it yourself. Stupid people suck, don't they?
Anyhow, what do you think the best answer for my issue is? Brands, sources or other recommendations welcome!
Hey your better off getting a sar-1 or a mac-90 !!! they are good ak's go to ar15.com and go to the equipment exchange, go to the ak's for sale !!!
Also try the hometown page there , and look for your state and you can ask , does anybody do ffl transfer for a good price !!!
You can also go to the gunshows and look for a good deal ....
Hoped I could help yeah !:)

MAK 90 and Vector (on Armory receivers) are probably the best fairly common AKs for the buck... they're a little pricier than Romanian AKs (they run about $350-450), and are built very nicely. If you find a Romanian SAR-1, they're not bad at all, they're usually a bit rough in fit and finish and may not have the best triggers. I'd check around on online auction sites (gunbroker comes to mind), look for a deal, and have it shipped to a local FFL. If you want the Vector, you can order direct from them, but you'll pay MSRP...still, they make good folding stock variants which are otherwise hard to find or pricey from other makers.

Go with what tooly says in regard to the Romanian SAR-1, if you can find one. Great little rifle.

MAK 90's are built well but you'll have to swap parts to put a pistol grip on it.Why not just buy one already to go? I've got a little over $500 dollars in my MAk 90 when I built it during the ban with the cost of 922 conversion parts. Now you can get one good to go right off the bat. Here is a link on some pretty good choices:

The Vector Arms ,AK V 47 , Classic is my next buy.
I have seen one and they are very well put together. Remember you said best AK clone. And for under $500 dollars it's sweet.
Whats with the use of the word "Clone"?
They are all AK's. All Kalashnikovs.
There are lots of companies that build AR's and 1911's. None of them are "clones" either. Just variations of 1911's, AR's, and AK's.

So you your saying an AK isn't an AK if it's not full-auto?
Then by your logic semi-auto AK's aren't clones, because they aren't the same.
Thanks for clearing that up! ;g ;e
