Just thought I would share a story about what happen to me the other day. While looking for something or someone (can't go further than that for now) in a very large and dark barn I was confronted very suddenly by a VERY large adult male Akita. I have one of these animals and have a deep love for them but I also have a very good understanding of their demeanor and how damn powerful they are.
This one was not about to be nice and had already started a charge for an attack. I do know the difference between a dog that is playing and one that is attacking so this is an attempt to defuse the crap storm that may get started. When a dog that weighs in at a slim 157lb exactly comes at you with teeth showing and a deep growl it is time to fight or run and running into a barn wall would not get me far.
I am amazed at just how fast they are but not surprised. By the time I had drawn my weapon he was on me at bad breath distance, literally, I could smell and feel the heat from this animals breath! I speed rocked my Glock 20 as he was about to lunge from about 3' away toward my face and fired the first round.
The 165gr Gold Dot from Double Tap worked well. It hit him in the right shoulder at a about a 30 degree angle and slightly down. This stopped the lunge before he had really got of the ground and shattered his shoulder and leg all the way to his paw. The bullet and bone frags ripped through his heart and lungs and made the other side of his hide look like bloody hamburger. I could not tell if the bullet exited or not.
The second round that was fired happened about 1/2 second after the first which gave me time to aim and fire into the top of his head. This bullet went through about 3" below where the skull meets the spine and went all the way down his neck killing him instantly. This was I think the worst puckered incident I have been involved with yet and I have looked at some folks down the sights of my weapon before.
Thanks to a great weapon and ammo and my training I am without injury. Although I am sad that such a beautiful animal which was doing his job had to eat it I am not sorry he did and I as a result was unharmed.
Thought I would share. I have already talked with Mike about this and thanked him for the loading that helped me from at the least stitches and possible a lot more.
