View Full Version : Surface Rust Removal
I bought a pistol that has a fair amount of surface rust. I cleaned it thoroughly with Rem Oil for about two hours, and there is still rust left. What should I do next??

Rust remover. Best followed by repolish and reblue.
The Rem Oil I have is more of a lubricant than a cleaner. Personally I would use 0000 steel wool and Break Free.
Flitz polish is a great way to get rid of surface rust and it doesn't damage the gun blue.

Years ago, probably twenty years ago, there was an article in one of the gun magazines about using a product called "Scrub Buds" to remove surface rust from a blued finish. Amway sold it. My wife used Amway products and I asked her if she had any. Of course she did so I took a pad and some oil and went to work on an old rifle that had a good deal of rust on it. Darned if it didn't work and work well! There wasn't a scratch on that bluing. I had her buy me a few boxes of them and have used them ever since. It is a pad of some kind of metal tape, all knitted together like a pad of SOS. I see on the website that they still make this product. Now I don't know if they've changed the formula over the years but jt's worth a try. If it still works, get a few boxes. They last pretty well and are great for tools and other things that pick up light rust. Good Luck. ConnScot
