Can someone please tell me how to replace the recoil spring on the STOCK guide rod. It looks simple to do, but I will probably break it. I have already ordered some new springs. Just need detail on how to take the old one off..
Thanks
Where the end coil of the spring comes together, at the small (front) end of the rod, take something like a small screwdriver tip and pull the main tip of the springaway from the next coil and get it started over the end of the rod, then work your way around until the whole first coil is over the end of the rod - once the end of the spring is pulled over the end of the rod it will come right off - the hard part is doing it in reverse to get the new one on. I have taken a few off and put them back on like this with no damagae to the rod or spring.

If you look at the large end of the stock guiderod there is a hole in the center, it goes all the way through. Take a straightened coat hanger or some other piece of rod longer than the guide rod and push it through. Be sure to hold the spring with something and just pop the little button off the small end. It just snaps in place and can be snapped back in place.
I would advise you not to force it off over the button because it will damage the button. Also be sure the new spring you want to use will fit over the stock guiderod because not all springs have the same inside diameter.
On a side note unless you need a different spring weight for some healthy competition I see NO reason to change the stock one out. The only Glock I own that has anything but the stock spring & guiderod assembly that came in the gun is one I use in Unlimited Competition. Glock balanced the spring assembly for most all general use and it works. Too much tinkeritous and shankroid mechanic advice usually cause more problems than it's worth. But, it's your Glock. You can drive your car over it if you like.;)

Yes, that's whay I do it this way. As Don at PC said, you can also take the end off the rod, but everybody seems to agree that you can only do that a few times before it won't stay on anymore.

If it is for competition is it legal to switch out the guiderod? If it is legal to use a SS or Tungsten guiderod you could get a non-captured rod and a variety of springs and experiement until you find the one that best meets your needs.

If it's IDPA SSP division, the guiderod has to be the same material as the original, which usually means using an original. I think it also has to be stock in GSSF amateur divisions, but I'm not sure.

Yep, in all GSSF Amateur Divisions it must be the stock guiderod and spring. I haven't shot any IDPA or IPSC so I don't know their rules. just trying to find more flexible options to meet your needs. I still think unless I was shooting an Unlimited Race gun with some really light reloads I would stick with the stock. Just my personal opinion. It was designed for best reliability using all factory ammo. As a matter of fact I have complete reliability with my GSSF Stock guns even shooting my light reloads. The only Glock I shoot with other than stock rod and spring is my Unlimited G17L.

This very well may be the year. Just have to get my house put back together after about 1000 gallons of water went through it. I do need some more shooting sport activity.
