I decided to put a sidemount and scope on my WASR-10 for shooting this weekend. I went with an inexpensive NcStar 3-9x42E and picatanny rail sidemount. So far I'm really pleased with this setup. Anybody else put optics on their AK??
Got Russian POSP 4x24V on my Vepr. Love it.

I also must say, the AKs with the banana clip and the scope are quite intimidating looking! Not to mention that it allows you to be functional with your rifle much further out to its ballistic potential.

Very, very russian  Can you use iron sights too with that set up?

I have a SAR-1 or a Romanian 7.62x39. I drilled holes in the dust over and mounted a 4x cheapy scope. I had to grind the screw heads down so the bold would clear and use a lot of thread lock but it works great. If I had it to do all over I would get a side mount or I would put set screws in the dust cover. I've always been a scope bigot but I have maybe $15 in a very used Bushnell scope and it works great.
Yes, I can use my iron sights. I can clean Vepr with the scope attached. POSP can be had with 2 mounts. Mine is V (tall) mount, anothet model, POSP 4x24N comes with a shorter mount, closer to the dust cover, but you can not use iron sights.
I am getting a Harris bipod this week for my AK

Please elaborate on what a POSP is. Also, post pics if you have them. I don't have a digital camera, otherwise I'd have pics of mine up already!!
I will post pics as soon as I can. I got Harris bipod yesterday for my Vepr too.
POSP is a current issue Russian sight. It comes with a sidemount already attached. It has a lighted recticle (the SP part in the name), makes it fun for night shooting. Sometimes AK's side sight mounting plates are not riveted parallel with the bore; POSP series has a greater adjustment range to compensate for it.
Mine was made in Byelorussia, not in Russia proper. After the break up of the Soviet Union, most of the optics manufacturers ended up outside of Russia (Ukraine and Byelorussia). Russia has only 2 optic factories left, and they make VERY few POSP sights.

Are they worth it though? I mean... it's an AK-47. I think my AK-47's practical accuracy is 150-200 yards MAX.
My Ak sat in the safe for years. I bought a couple of Bushnell HoloSights that were demos for $150 a piece about year ago. I still had one sitting around so I decided I would pull that old AK out and do some upgrades. I installed nato length polymer stocks, Ultimak gas tube/rail, Ergo grip I modified a little and the Holosight. I love how fast the holosights are to use.
Ballistic-it is an POSP 8x42VD scope. It is nice, but magnification is too mich for an AK. The 42 millimeter lense barely clears the iron sights. Russkies us them on SVD series rifles. Nice thing about that one, it is a "D" variant, which means it has an adjustble eye piece. 4x24 also come in "D", but they are harder to find, even in Russia.
It is desigened to use a 3V element, Russians use a special battery, that looks like tall Duracell 357 series, almost like a barrel. 2 regular 357 work just as nice, and they are MUCH better than bastardized versions that use a AA battery.

Yeah I know that one was a SVD model. I was just posting a picture along with the link, I don't even like POSP scopes. I Like the Kobra much better.

Not really IMHO. They aren't precision tack drivers.

Depends on the size of your target. I shoot at empty 20lb. propane tanks at 150-200 yards without a scope with my AK74 all the time. I have no trouble seeing it at that distance. To each his own.

Not a scope per se, but I have a KOBRA red dot on my Romanian SAR-1 (http://www.freedomoptics.com/Comersus/store/comersus_dynamicIndex.asp). It's the model EKP-1S-03M and takes 2 "AA" batteries.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I normally shoot tennis balls and golf balls at 30 yards. That's kinda tough with the iron sights. It's doable, but its kinda tough. And btw...what kind of iron sights are on a '74? I assume they're different from the '47?

Nope, they are the same.
