Thanks... im looking to get a new sling. How do you like it?
Thanks... im looking to get a new sling. How do you like it?
I've been running the VCAS slings since Feb / March of 2006. I have them on ALL of my AR's and Shotguns.
Origionally wrote this in mid-2006, it has been updated a couple times and reposted several times .......... my feelings remain the same on the VCAS:
**********************************************************
Of all the designs that I have used I prefer the Blue Force Gear Vickers Combat Applications Sling (VCAS) 2 point over all others.
The easy adjustable 2 point sling (like the Vickers and VTAC) have a combination of the pros of both of the single and 3 point sling, but very few of the "cons" of a single point sling or 3 point sling design.
The thing I like about the Blue Force Gear Vickers (VCAS) sling is the ability of placement on the gun. With a 3 point sling the front attachment is in the area of the front sight post and the rear attachment is on the rear of the stock. With a Single Point sling both the front and rear attachment are at the same location (generally), where the receiver extention (or stock) meets up with the lower receiver.
With the 2 point sling you can use several different location points. For the front attachment if you have a railed handguard you can place the front from as far forward as the front sight post or as far back as the delta ring or anywhere in between. With the rear attachment you can use either a Single Point Sling Plate or can attach it to the buttstock.
I perfer the front attachment of the sling near the delta ring (the location where the LaRue rails have the quick detach sling socket attachment hole) and the rear of the sling attached toward the rear of the buttstock.
The pro's of the Blue Force Gear VCAS sling is when the carbine is in the ready position, the VCAS gives you the freedom of movement of the single point sling, no extra straps to get in the way, doesn't get hung up on gear, etc.
In the down postion the gun lies diagonally across your body just like a 3 point. This makes walking easier, gun doesn't hit the shooter when he transitions to pistol. If performing tasks with your hands you can move the gun to your back and it retains well like a 3 point sling.
The adjustment on the Blue Force Gear VCAS sling is very quick and very easy. This lets the shooter have as much freedom or retention as he needs.
The only con that I have found is it's not as good to transition from one shoulder to the other with the Vickers sling (compared to a single point), but it's much easier than a 3 point.
The Blue Force Gear Vickers (VCAS) sling is the optimum sling for Patrol, SWAT, civilian or competition use in my opinion based on the different sling set ups that I have used over the years.
I've been using the Blue Force Gear VCAS sling on all of my AR's and Benelli shot guns for over 2 years and I haven't found anything that I haven't liked about the Vickers sling yet.
If budget is an issue, take a look at the Blue Force Gear Victory Series VCAS. It's an economy version of the standard VCAS.
***********************************************************************************************
I wrote this back in May 2008, but thought it may have some relevance here:
I was talking to Ashley Burnsed at Blue Force Gear a year or so ago about something unrelated and he asked what I thought of a padded version of his VCAS sling.
At the time I told him in my opinion a padded version was not needed.
A few months ago I tried one and I simply didn't know what I didn't know. I was so impressed with the padded version that I'm in the process of changing ALL of my VCAS slings over to the padded version.
The padded portion of the sling won't chaff exposed skin, it slides over gear more easily (not that I ever had a problem with the standard VCAS, but the padded version slides over gear more easliy), no buckles on the portion of the sling that goes over your shoulder and around your back, etc.
Both the padded and un-padded VCAS slings are awesome, but for me after trying both, I much prefer the padded version.

One of the relatively few AR mods I haven't at least seen in person. Care to clarify what that purpose might be?
allows you to get a gloved finger in the guard :af:
and it goes along nicely with the othe KAC items on the carbine

Magpul MS2
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f240/mvician/ms2sand.jpg
from the Magpul website
Driven by the operational experience of Magpul Dynamics™ instructors, the MS2™ Multi-Mission Sling System was designed to give a versatile weapon-retention solution for a multitude of tactical environments and missions. As a standalone product, the rapidly-convertible MS2™ allows an operator to leverage the maneuverability of single-point® attachment for direct-action, or two-point attachment for stability. Single-hand adjustments, quick-detach lanyard and positive-locking metal hardware provide flexibility and durability in a truly adaptable sling system.
Used in conjunction with the Magpul® ASAP™ plate (sold separately), the MS2™ enables seamless transitions into an array of shooting positions without getting bound or fouled. The MS2™ concept allows switching from Weapon Shoulder to Reaction Shoulder for shooting around corners, under vehicles, or to minimize exposure. The MS2™ can also increase operator survivability by keeping the weapon in the fight in case of injury to the operator’s shoulder, arm, or hand.
The concept is simple: Your survivability rate dramatically increases if your gear allows you to move freely in a dynamic environment.
Made in USA
Features
Ø Fast transition from Single-Point® to Two-Point configuration
Ø Adjustment Loop for rapidly adding or removing sling tension with a single-hand

Finished my second build today. This one started with a RRA lower and RRA LPK, Mega upper with M4 feed ramps, USGI M-16 bolt carrier group, 16" govt profile 1:7 barrel from Bulldog Barrels. This one gets a YHM customizable free-float forearm, KNS non-rotating hammer/trigger pins, YHM 2-rail gas block and Magpul CTR stock. MI folding gas block front sight, and for now a no-name folding rear. No optics yet; I think this one is going to get a Millett DMS-1.

I just received an LRB stripped lower, and will be starting another build. The one below I built in 1984 using an SGW matched upper/lower set. You can probably tell that some of the mods are recent technology. I will be moving the A2 stock from this one to the LRB and putting a VLTOR EMOD in its place. I will post up pics of both together when done, but for now ...
Sorry about the backdrop on this one

Have you had a chance to shoot it yet? I'm REALLY curious if that scope position works well for you. I've been looking at putting a scope (that scope, actually) on my AR, and I have a bulky rear sight, so I'd need to mount it a bit forward like that.

The Ace stock looks cool, never cared much for its function. I was happy to find a buyer for mine so I could replace it with a CTR.

Okay, in my last post I said I was working on an SPR. Well the first thing I did was move the A2 stock to the LRB Lower and put a VLTOR E-Mod on the Carbine. It ended up looking like this - (but I am still looking at an EOTech for the MI Extended Rail):
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/pdogkilr/Firearms/AR-15/IMG_0935RightSidefromRAW.jpg
Anyway, I installed a Timney 3 LB in the lower, along with the DD Ambi Burnsed:

A good deal of paint was still in the small "grip panels". So,...........
I filled them in. Not sure I like them or not.

Thanks! They have been out for about 5 weeks to the best of my knowledge. I bought mine on the 17th of last month. Very high quality piece. Not milspec but nice none the less. Here's a link (http://www.pkfirearms.com/content/1/20/9/29), it has some pretty cool features. Click on the picture and there are several more you can scroll trough that are very detailed.

VERY nice combo!
Found a new toy last weekend. Tired of waiting for my RRA upper that I ordered last December. So I found a DPMS complete rifle with a full stock and changed out the DPMS trigger for a RRA 2-stage trigger and the RRA colapsible stock. Picture shows the RRA lower but now the DPMS lower and upper are back together.

New Recce and my only AR. Need some rail covers as these rails are like holding a cheese grater. If they would just round the edges on the rail, I don't even think covers would be necessary but as is they definitely are. Any recommendatons? I'm thinking about the Magpul XTM's. Any idea how many packs to order to cover an 11 inch rail on all sides? Makes me think I should have just bought the Recce basic..heh. Don't think I'm going with any optics for now....just going to get good with the irons. As is, I think it will serve its purpose.

I believe Mike posted some comparison weights of three different stocks and I think he said it was 3/4 lb. It feels about that weight too me as well.

Here's my S&W M&P15T with no real mods yet. I just got it and I have lots of plans but not lots of money!:crying:
Out of the box, the gun has lots of great goodies from Troy Industries, which I would've bought anyway. It has all the things that make up a great AR, such as M4 feedramps, properly staked gas key, chrome-lined barrel, etc. The Smith AR's seem to have a big following within the LE arena. It's certainly not a tricked out Noveske or Colt, but it's perfect for me.
Intentions are a 1-4x scope, new Magpul furniture, trigger job, bipod, sling, etc. Anyone want to send some money for this stuff?

I used Lacquer sticks to fill in the "SAFE" and "FIRE" markings. Some people use a crayon, just rub it in and wipe off the excess.
