Ooh-rah!!! Went to MCRD San Diego in May of '88 spent a year and a half doing barracks duty in Naples, Italy, then my time was spent in the fleet with Weapons Co. 3/6 until 1992. I would say I was primarily an 0351 but I just like to say I was an 03 since it's pretty damn strange for a '51 to be assigned an M-60E3 during the Gulf war. Actually, it's probably not so strange since I was first assigned to be a .50 gunner until we got reserve TOWs in then we were supposed to work with them so we were trained with those guys until we were changed over again to mobil dragon teams but needing a machine gunner on the turret, I was it. Active duty USMC from 94 to 98. I'm a hollywood Marine but spent 4 years stationed on PI as a Brig guard. Becoming a Marine is the single most important thing I have ever done and I don't regret a minute of it.

Yeah, I know what you mean when you say it's one of the most important things in my life being a Marine. Getting married and the birth of my son, (the future Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps) are the other two. These days I'm in the USAFR and I'll openly tell anybody that the Air Force is what I do but having been a Marine is what I'm proud of!^c

I find it strange to think you are flying a helicopter that is older than you are! 46's saved a lot of Marines butts back in Nam, great bird.

FLMarine
03-11-2006, 20:45
It is a little wierd flying something that is almost 20 years older than myself. Hell, my father used to jump out of them in the early 70's when he was a jumpmaster with the Marines and he was even shot down in one in Vietnam. Yeah they're old but they are still a blast to fly.

I'm going to be very sad when they finally replace them all with Ospreys. I have to decide in the next year if I want to transition the the Osprey or try and stay 46's. I'd rather stay 46's, I love em.

46's saved my bacon on many occasions during my 34-year Marine career - including on the hills and at the Khe Sanh Combat Base. To see them coming in from the horizon boosted morale to unimaginable levels. The "Purple Foxes" will forever enjoy my gratitude.

May they fly forever.

May you continue to lead the charge and be the Angel from above.

Thank you for continuing to serve.

Hello to all Marines here. I'm a USMC Vietnam Veteran(5-68 thru 12-68). Bootcamp was finished in late August 1967. Honor Platoon 2004.After combat training I wasn't 18 yet so I couldn't go to Vietnam with my fellow boots(Most of 'em went). I went to the Defense Language Institute(DLI)Army Base ar Monterey and took the 3 month Vietnamese Course, 8 hrs a day Mon thru Fri. Short course didn't change my 0311 status, but it sure helped knowing the language. I arrived in Danang in early May of 1968. I was assigned to Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion 26th Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Division. These Marines had just left Khe Sahn about a month or so earlier. Anyway we were the "Fighting Nomads". We went afloat in August and flew on and off the USS Princeton on "OPs" in Vietnam. Flying in CH34s mostly, but a couple of 46s too. Operation Meade River was my last "OP", then back home. Wow, you were in Operation Meade River? Arizona Territory- Dodge City Area. We(Foxtrot Co.2/26) were the blocking force dug in by the river, when Echo Co. was Sweeping. watched my lunch (C-Rat Cans) go up from some fire, then our whole side of the river got lit up. Remember the USMC flyin' in the Steak & Potatoes on November 10th 1968? OOORAH. CG13.

USMC06
03-20-2006, 23:04
Yes, I fondly remember Meade River. It was my platoon (Second Platoon, India Company 3/26) that closed the gap to the river (while you had a front row seat watching the fireworks across the river) on the final day - I believe it was Dec. 9th, 1968. It was I who took the final shot of the operation while the 46's and 53's were circling above ready to land and take us out of Dodge City and to Danang. I was the Platoon Sergeant. I have described it to many as one 20-day continous firefight. Look at the 881 South and Purple Foxes website for much info. You can Google it.

Yes, we had some very special Marines on 881 South. I am still in touch with some. We are having a 3/26 reunion later this year in NH where I will get to see some of them. Many did not make it out.

I also served with the MCSF. I was the CO of the MCSF at Kings Bay 95-97.

Was LtCol Anderson (the CO) there already before you left Bangor? He is a friend. He and I communicated frequently when I was the CO at MCSF Kings Bay.

No, Sir. MCSFCO Bangor was between COs when I left. If I recall correctly, Maj Graham was the acting CO.

Platoon 1029. Close to the last platoon of the 1965. I think the last one I can remember was platoon 1031. I arrived at MCRD on the 29th of Dec.

I saw someone post about deploying on the NO Boat and the Boxer at the same time as one of my friends. I assume you were with 2/1, he was Golf 2nd Platoon. Really is a small world, come here, and see that there are connections to people you know. Kind of surprised me.

Then to Camp Kinser Okinawa until 1992, I was originally attached to MP Co. but I spent a year with HQ Co. in NBC. It was a good gig. I got to train a lot of Marines and hit the gas chamber about 4-5 times that year. yeah.

1992-1994 MCAS El Toro.
I was attached to MWSG-373 which I spent a total of about 1 hour checking in and out of that unit. I spent my tour at El Toro attached to the Provost Marshals Office as an MP. Its a crying shame they are going to demolish Tustin and El Toro for some damn shopping malls. Even one of the Blimp Hangers at Tustin is getting the axe.

Correction. You served in the United States Marine Corps. You will ALWAYS have bragging rights. We just don't need to. We all served in different ways. I thank God for the grunts who hump a pack and the admin pogue who cut his orders. They are all the best of all things.
