Hardly "Top Gun." I was stationed on the Midway when the Ranger ran a red light and hit another ship. We had to take her place which extended our cruise. I was in a good squardon so it wasn't so bad. I then did a cruise on the Ranger with another squadron. I didn't like the squadron so it was a hard 6 mos.

I was stashed with VF-1 after AOCS in the summer of '91, so I walked aboard Ranger a few times with those guys. Then, in the winter of 1993 my RAG class CQed aboard her.

my grandfather (Jack Ruttschow) worked in a squadron on the Ranger in the late 60's or early 70's. Wore his Ranger belt buckle till the day he died.

No, I don't believe so, if I remember right it was a tanker. The Rangers pointy end was bent and had to go into Yokosuka for reapirs.
