View Full Version : What's Kimber going to do with old guns?

I heard some rumors that Kimber was dropping their external extractor, and we finally got our new Kimber master dealer catalog at the store I work at, and sure enough, they've dropped the external extractor from almost all of their guns now.
So, my question is, what is kimber going to do with all of the people that have external extractor guns? If they aren't going to make the extractors anymore, what kind of support can people expect from them? Are their customers just SOL?
I would imagine that Kimber has a good supply of external Ex parts. If those were to run out I would think they would just replace the slides with internal extractors. I don't think anyone is going to be SOL

If you work at a Kimber master dealer you should be able to get your answer;Q

I also don't think anyone will be SOL. I agree that no doubt Kimber has TONS of external extractors and other parts for repair as needed. And if all else fails: new slide! :)
But it might behoove you to buy a couple of replacement extractors if you have an external extractor gun.
I have an Exteranl extractor if anyone wants it PM me your address and I'll drop it in the mail. I don't have an EX Ex gun so it's useless to me.

I have an internal extractor Kimber. I think I might need a spare 1911 just in case! ;)

Kimber is pretty hard to pin down on an answer to anything when you actually try to call them and talk to them. Or more accurately, leave them messages that they ignore.
Soon, when you enter the Kimber company doors there will be the "hits" wall on your right and the "misses" wall on your left.
The external models will be displayed on the left under dim lighting with an apology letter from the company president underneath.

couldnt figure out the external extractor thing in the model of 1911 in the firstplace.now they come full circle to the origonal design.they jumped on that bandwagon like all the others.at least they realize it was an answer to a non existant problem and went back.now my UC no longer feels "one uped "by the UC II!

I wonder what they will do for dealers who have inventories of external extractor guns on the shelf? Those guns are going to be harder to sell, particularly to the savvy buyer that knows they are being discontinued.

I doubt that they will have much trouble selling them. The majority of them work just fine and the majority of the people buying them probably don't visit these forums.

I would bet the majority of buyers have no clue they are going to be discontinued. I could be wrong but it just seems that people like us are by far the minority.
This wasn't an overnight thing. Kimber has been phasing out the externals for the past 4 months. We got our last Custom II rental at the range in early December and it's an internal. With one exception, all the new Kimbers that have been shipped since December that I've seen come in have been internals.
I think the inventories of external extractor models sitting at dealers isn't too large........except for the places with ridiculous pricing.

What WILL happen is people will buy the guns, and THEN visit this forum and the other 1911 forums, and will figure out what happened, and will be pissed.
I think.

Just think how pissed they are going to be if they send it back to Kimber and they don't get it right.
