HI,
IM 17 and i've been thinking of joinging the CG. I was wondering about people who have been in the CG what should i expect to be doing if i join ie boot camp and assingment after.
any feed back is good feed back.

I did 20 years and walked out with 2 degrees that I didn't pay for and a job I can do in the civ. sector for life. As long as you don't mind starting from the bottom and working your way up you should do fine. You get out of it what you put into it. I made Chief, then went into an officer program. Have been retired 6 years now.

I was active duty Coast Guard from May of 1988 until October of 1992. The only thing I regret about it is getting out. I wanted to be a cop so bad I could taste it, so I left the Coast Guard and did become a cop. In hindsight, I could have stayed in for 20, retired at 37 (went in at 17) and still been a cop.

I did stints in the Army National Guard and Air National Guard after I left the CG and nowhere did I find the professionalism and esprit d' corps that I saw in the Coast Guard.

Turns out I have incurable sea sickness. I never knew it until I was stationed on an 82 foot'er (1980, USCG Point Bridge, Marina Del Rey, CA) great duty, except when I was throwing up.

I lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks and was advised by the navy medical folkes to find a new career, before I die.

The AF treated me right and I reired from AD in 2002.

Jim: When did you go to boot and what company were you in? I was in R107 June to Aug 80 at Cape May.

Started June 4, 1980. I don't remember the company.

I do remember a few of the more "choice" instructors!

I started June 16th...my CC was HM1 Martel.
