Keesler AFB, Mississippi. (too hot; let's move up north!)

Minot AFB, North Dakota. (STILL too hot! We arrived in August, and promptly experienced 2 straight weeks of 100+ temps! All I want is summer temps in the 70s; let's try again...)

Eielson AFB, Alaska.

Did you know it gets over 80 degrees there in the summer, too? ;P
I gave up (retired). ;f

How is good old Mountain Home? I started as a crew chief in the 391st back in '92. Then I switched to the 390th just before the F-15s arrived on base. I liked the C-Models better due to the lack of bomb racks to bash my head on.;)

Kevin--
Mountain Home has changed quit a bit since i got here in 97. the tankers and B1's are gone, the 16s are leaving, and soon according to the BRAC listing, Mountain Home will be an all F-15 base. 2 squadrons of F-15Es, 1 F-15C, and a squadron of jets belonging to Singapore. I'm not sure what they fly. Right now the 391st's aircraft are a little better than the 390th maintenance wise. So the 391st is the place to be. i agree with you, i have hade plenty of eagle bites to my head and all the spots that really hurt. i guess we'll see if i like C models when i get to Kadena. I'm a non-vol so i only have to go for three years. NO GUNS FOR THREE YEARS! CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! I like it enough to try and come back here as a follow on.

Lotsa SAC bomber bases on that 2nd list.
Your dad fly or turn wrenches on Buffs or tankers?
Or just walk circles around them in the snow (nothing wrong with that, by the way...)? :) :patriot:

Dad was a jet engine mechanic, although he says he worked on about anything that the Air Force had at one time or another. Says he did some wrenching on B-25's Mitchells in the 50's in Michigan, but yea, lots of Buffs & KC's. Worked on lots of F-105's & F-4's on Okinawa, dad always said he could tell when the had a bad week in Vietnam by the number of F-105's he had to get ready to send to Vietnam. Ended up working on B-57's at Malmstrom at the time he retired. They did send him to school before his tour in Vietnam, he worked on OV-10 Broncos that were used as FAC's. He had some pictures of one that caught a rocket at Da Nang, and it just melted in place. He said the only metal on them was the engines, struts, and assorted pieces in the cockpit.

Unfortunately he passed in 2000, and we had the Honor Guard from Malmstrom at his funeral. He and I were in the Air Force at the same time from 1973-1976. Caught hell in basic when they saw my "dear mom" card was going to an AF M/SGT. Oh well, mind games. Take care...

My condolences on your loss.

Sounds like your dad got to work on a big chunk of aircraft history with experience on all those different planes. Very cool. Like an auto mechanic working on everything from Model-Ts to Mustang GTs.

A salute in thanks of his service (and yours). :patriot:

Selection . . . still laugh when I think about it. At happy Lackland, I remember putting northern tier bases on my dream sheet (Fairchild to Maine). WhynotMinot was my top pick. I remember the fella at the desk looking over the form, looking up at me, looking back down, then look back at me and say, "are you really sure about this?" Then there was Lowry. Great base, all school then. Love that big hanger we loaders went off to. First really big snowstorm I lived in was there. Remember that silly 3.5% beer. Ah yes, then came my assignment. Remember the northern tier stuff? Nope, Eglin. Well, buddy in tech school whined and the swap was on . . . for happy hoho land Holloman. It was actually a great time. Hot in the winter, sweeping two feet of snow off the wings of the 15s at the 49th in the winter. Sand surfing at White Sands.

Then was a stint in the Guard. Back to school at Hurlburt, tromping around the swamps of Eglin, survival at Fairchild and then home to Camp Murray (Ft. Lewis).

I realize why there was a push to shutter bases. I still think that they closed some fine bases in their haste.

Speaking of which, how bad did Keesler get hit during the hurricane?

I saw some aerial photos of the entire area not too long afterward. They were relatively high-res, and if you knew the area, you could find a landmark and zoom-in pretty close for a look-see.

The problem was, there wasn't many beach-side landmarks left.

It looked like the worst of the initial surge was mostly stopped by the railroad track embankment that ran East-West along the penninsula, but the back bay also suffered a (smaller) surge which messed-up a lot of stuff, too. Most of the larger base buildings looked intact, but a few were missing roofs or roof panels. I had seen pics on the news of the base evac-ing many of the student beforehand, so I think they had far fewer people than normal on-base when it hit.

I'll see if I can find the link to the pics...

Here's a link to some photos of the area, but not much from the air base itself:

I graduated high school in Jan 1961. (Hit by bus in second grade and left back 1/2 year.) Sick of school. Joined Air Force.

Lackland AFB
Lowery AFB
Kadena AFB and
McConnell AFB

I seperated in January 1965. Had no idea, at the time just how good my timming was. I didn't have to even consider going to Viet Nam, Canada or burning my draft card (even though I'm sure I wouldn't have).

Hi there najaboy....I'm a 11-year vet of a rescue unit too (at Gabreski ANGB, NY)....we replaced you guys in theater in 2003 and I've done a deployment with ya'll during ONW. I never served in Moody, but during my tour I wore a "USAF RESCUE MOODY AFB" t-shirt during my off time.

Wow. Except for Buckley, that's a LOT of warm-weather bases on that list. Keesler twice, too. My condolences. ;)

Even if you did 18+ years, that averages a new base every 1.5 years, with a few TDYs in there, too.

I only had 3 permanent-party bases in my slightly-shortened-before-retirement career, and one of those was 7 years long (Minot). :freak:

I bet you have household moving down to a science (if you even unpack completely).

Ah yes... Gabreski. I've only been there once, but had a blast. Likewise, I had a chance to sit down and talk with one of your HH-60 pilots during Katrina rescue ops last year. Needless to say, it gave me a new perspective on The Perfect Storm.

The only complaint I have about Gabreski has been triple deuce. That plane has seemingly followed me around the rescue world as a loaner to whatever unit I'm in, and always seems to break hard at the most inopportune times.

I would have gone nuts staying in one place for a long peroid of time. Minot..7 years at that! :brickwall:

Although my wife married me with full knowledge of what she was getting into, she was rather dissappointed from time to time with either me on TDY several months at a time and moving often. Aim High! We are experts at moving. The key was not to be pack rats and travel light.

Most of the TDYs were overseas as well. That was during the good ol' days of the cold war and the few years that followed. Such a different Air Force today, from the structure, the view/attitude, and of course, the existing threats.

My current view...been there, done that, now time to watch the show on Fox News and let others make history for a change. :fishing:

18 years as a bag carrier, that must be a record!! I spent six starting in 79 as a way to get off Nellis. After recruiting school wound up in the 61st at Springfield, Oregon with a Flight Sup whose attitude was just make your goal and I don't care where you go or what you do for the rest of the month! Since the timber industry had just crashed here, I made goal plus an extra four or five to keep them happy and went fishing the rest of the month. Screwed up when the Ops Sup asked me to go to the P.I. and I refused due to the political climate at the time, then he offered Alaska and I bit. Wound up with the laziest office partner I had ever met and an absolute slob. Between flying around the state hitting villages and schools, working 14-16 hour days (was also MEPS LNCO) and finding that most who took the ASVAB were "rocks", my health took a turn for the worse and the doc ordered me back to my primary at Elmendorf, as the stress was agravating my PTSD. Recruiting was good for advancement as I went from SSgt to SMSgt in six years but I don't mess the politics and general back-stabbing B.S. that was the rule. At the time the entire Air Force was going downhill so when they offered me a medical retirement I jumped at it and haven't looked back since.

I did most everything in Recruiting and at the end as the Ops Chief in Nashville along came a royal jerk of an SQ/CC who took an instant dislike to me. As time went on he made it his goal to get rid of me and back-doored me with a lateral assigment to Los Angeles. Hence, dropped papers and said good-bye. I do know that the "punks" we were getting as new recruiters were really starting to get on my last nerve. We had to be kinder/gentler to them. Do I miss it...no. But I sure enjoy the check and bennies every month!

The only complaint I have about Gabreski has been triple deuce. That plane has seemingly followed me around the rescue world as a loaner to whatever unit I'm in, and always seems to break hard at the most inopportune times.

...ah yes...triple deuce...she's a legend of the worst kind at Gabreski. I've flown on her more than once as a pax and/or MEGP.

I'm no longer at Gabreski...I'm now with the AFRES at MacDill. I miss Gabreski but not the Long Island Expressway traffic during the summer.

I only brought one gun there with me an that was an old ruger security six. Sorry I didn't see ya. I might mention I was Air National Guard at the time. 35-10 was dress and appearance standards. Back then a great deal of the national guard and reserve guys attempted to fit both military and civilian profile. I personally wore my mustache and hair out of regulation. I guess it was a Woodstock/Vietnam era thing. Now I would just love to have some hair! Not really, you don't have to use a hair dryer when you are bald.
I understand the Air Force has changed a great deal since the vietnam era. I have also.

Well, in the entire eight plus years I served I didn't serve overseas even once. How in the hell that happened (or didn't happened, depending upon how you look at it) is beyond me considering my original career field of aircraft maintenance.

1995 Lackland AFB
1995 Sheppard AFB (Aircraft Maintenance Fundamentals Course, aka, Fundies)
1995 - 1999 Charleston AFB, SC (C-17 crew chief, 2A551J)
1998 - 1999 Goodfellow AFB, TX (retrained to become an intel puke)
1999 - 2003 Fort Meade, MD (aka, Meade AFB since zoomies outnumbered the grunts) 1N571, Electronic Signals Intelligence Exploitation Craftsman

That's about it. Now I'm just another "silly villian."

1951-1952 McDill AFB

I almost got myself killed in Ubon just before rotation out in 72. Four of us decided to go downtown to watch a Chinese movie, and we made the mistake of taking a cab. Cabbie decided to run the only traffic light in town and almost planted us in the grill of one of those BIG Trucks! Enjoyed the tour though.
