I initially posted this on 1911forum. I copied and pasted here for the guys who don't go over there..

Picked up a GI-FS model today. Here's my initial review. Sorry but it's a bit long winded.

Initial out of the box impression:

I was worried. Upon inspection of the gun I found slight “problems”. For $300 what do you expect? There were rough spots here and there on the gun. Nothing too drastic that would alarm anyone else. I personally hate cosmetic flaws. I also noticed that the mainspring housing was a bit loose. I could wiggle it a bit even with the mainspring pin inserted. The front sight was also crooked. Surely this thing won't hit POA..

Inspection time and dry fire function testing:

I COULD NOT pull the slide all the way to the rear. There was so much friction between the slide and frame. It felt gritty. I literally had to force the slide all the way back with my strength. When I finally got the slide pulled back, it stayed there under friction. Hmmmm… Mind you this was with recoil spring tension.
The slide and frame were not 100% with each other, if you will. It looked like they didn’t finish lapping the two together. That was a major concern. I had to slap the slide in the rear to get it to slide forward. Uh oh. The hammer followed the slide. Not safe.

I detailed stripped the gun and gave it a thorough cleaning hoping that it was just dirty. Every piece of the gun was individually scrubbed and clean.

I lubed up the gun and put it back together. Slide was still acting up so I put in a used 18.5# recoil spring to see if it would help out. It helped the slide close a bit easier but pulling it back was still difficult.
Next were the safety checks. The gun failed horribly. My first guess was that the sear spring wasn’t adjusted properly. I took it out and did some tension of the leaves. That was the ticket. The safety checks passed and the hammer no longer followed the slide during the slide slapping and slide drop. With that out of the way I had to take care of the slide and frame friction. I ended up hand cycling it dozens of times. I finally loosened up a bit. I figured live round firing would be the solution to this problem.

Range time:

I bought 100 rounds of Magtech 230gr ball ammo. It’s cheap ammo IMO. If it can feed Magtech, surely it can feed anything on the market. I also brought along 50 rounds of Federal HST carry ammo.
I had 3 total mags for the gun. Factory Novak mag, a Springfield plain-jane 7 rounder, and a CMC Power Mag 8.
For some reason I could not get the gun to load any rounds with the CMC mag. It would jam every round into the feedramp and get caught. I would have to eject the mag and clear it. I never got the mag to load and fire, period. Anyway I took the rounds out of the CMC mag and loaded the other two mags up. Low and behold BANG! 150 rounds were shot out of the two other mags without a hiccup. The gun loosened up quite a bit also. There’s still a bit of friction maybe the last ¼” of the slide cycle. You can definitely feel it. I’ll shoot 300-500 more rounds through it to see if it gets totally loose and smooth.

The gun did shoot POA. I had a fellow shooter put a few mags through the gun. He was hitting POA also. That’s a good thing.

Conclusion:

Although my gun had minor out of the box problems, it ended being 100% functional. That’s what I wanted to see. All these reviews had me going. I would have been really disappointed if I had constant FTF and FTE’s. There were no gun related malfunctions today. I'll give an updated review in a few days to a week.

That last 1/4 inch of friction may be the trigger disconnect. They can get bent and start causing friction as well as other problems. It's hard to tell if one is bent because they always look slanted and weird, but it does happen.

Is that mainspring off because it's shape is bad or because the frame has the slots cut wrong?

I don't know if you want suggestions, but I would replace the trigger disconnect, sear spring, and mainspring housing, and maybe the sear too. All of those can contribute to the cycling friction problem.

That is odd, I would call it a lemon.

I have never shot a RIA but the ones I have handled in the shop did not have the flaws that this one did.

I opted for the SA Mil-spec for a few $ more and am very satisfied. I wanted a good, faithful recreation of the original GI issue and got one.

The RIA I handled seemed to look and feel good. The slide travel was not perfect, but it was clean and didnt have any "stops" in its travel.

That being said I probably did not inspecti it as close as you did, but I did field strip and have a look.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

This is where I had to smoothen things out. The area circled in red was rubbing the area near the disconnector also in red.
The slide cycles normally now with a hint of rubbing. I'm really sure that live firing will take care of it once and for all.

I wouldn't call it a true lemon. It does function now. I can actually take care of the flaws but I'm not going to right away. This is definitely not a carry piece. It's one of my range guns. My Springfield has the nod for defensive purposes.

Put another thousand through it.

Maybe lighten up the sear tension, you'll go through full mags in no time at all ;)

Good review.

I've considered a RIA several times when I had an extra few hundred around, only to end up buying something else. Now pondering a RIA compact as the start for a meltdown, matte hardchromed CC build.

Since the last posting the gun has smoothened up all the way. It feels "normal" now. I continued to hand cycle all week long when I got the chance. I would pick it up and cycle it 20-30 time and put it down. Whenever I was around it I would do that.
I didn't shoot in on Sunday so the round count is still at 150.

I ditched the loose fitting factory MSH today and swapped in an Ed Brown MSH with minimal fitting.

Nice to hear. Been considering getting one as a first 1911 (might as well learn on something that I can tinker with).

Good write up. I've been thinking about picking one up as a "beater".

Was the loose-fitting factory MSH made of nylon or steel?

My Colt has a nylon MSH. ;Q I need to get around to putting in the nice arched steel one Robert sent me ;f

Breech, you are a brave man indeed. I am not a gunsmith, and those mishaps would have sent me looking for other guns !

I got a RIA as my first 1911 and it has been great. I paid $250 used in the case with a extra Kimber mag. I am really happy with it. It is 100% reliable and a great intro to the 1911 world for $250.

Haven't we heard similar complaints of guns costing 3X as much?

If shooting it takes care of most of the problems, hey, it is a winner in my book.

I have described my out of the box tight extractor problems elsewhere. I consider the gun 100% now.

I did some parts swapin' a few days ago. I'm headed to the range on Friday. I hope it's still 100%.

i ahve the chance tomorrow at a RIA commander sized gun. it has the full sized grip, but the barrel doesnt seem as long as a commander, more like an officers......there is no barrel bushing either, it has a bell mouthed type barrel at the muzzle.....

the magazine didnt drop free, nor did a generic 1911 seven shot mag.

id like to get another 1911, and the RIA are priced right, but the quality concerns me.

if its nothing more than 200 or so rounds to smooth things up. thats fine. but if i have to break out the doobie grinder.....well thats not what im looking for.

Your experience with the RIA seems to be outside the norm....most owners report no problems. I'm glad to see that you were able to work through them and the gun is a "keeper". That said, I'm sure RIA/Armscor would have done what it would take to make you happy. Their customer service seems to be pretty good.

I love my RIA. I bought it so I could try my hand at a little gunsmithing without messing up an expensive Springer or Kimber. So far I've got about $450 in the gun (total) and I'm having a blast with it. I've replaced the grip safety, trigger, hammer and sights -- all on my own. And the best part -- it shoots great! Now I'm starting to play around with different grips to "dress it up" a bit. Here are a couple of pics of mine wearing some different styles (same gun, though):

If I can, I'm taking her back to the range this afternoon!

Thanks for helping to spread the word about the best-kept secret in 1911's!

just got her today.
mine has that same machining flaw at the back of the slide above where the hammer would rest.

the mainspring housing is semetrical though unlike yours.

and yes, if youre pointing out that damn near useless front sight, mine has that too. how did you replace that?

the sights, grip safety and hammer are all in need of replacement before this would become a carrying gun.

for now, mine will be a range gun to be shot only while wearing a glove. my hand is large enough for the "bite" to leave a strawberry after one magazine full.

yeah, i was suprised with that. i figured on a "el cheapo" gun, the hard plastic ones would be on there. oh, wait, thats colt that scrimps on the grips...:)
