View Full Version : Mossberg 500 mag extension
Does anyone know if you can extend the mag on a mossberg 500. If I could do that my gun would be the perfect platform for the "ultimate" home defense weapon.

+1. Extentions cannot be put on Mossberg shotguns. What you want is a Mossberg 9 shot 590.

That's somewhat true, but if you look around at gunshows, you can sometimes find the long extended mag tubes and the barrel to go with them for the 500's. I've found a couple over the years.
whats the capacity of a regular 500?

That's correct - Regular 500's are 5 + 1 of 2.75" Shells.

Take it apart and check if a small plug might be in the mag. Check if the spring is binding. If you can, find another Mossberg and compare it side by side. Gunshop, pawn shop etc. Last but not least, post a few pics of that Mossberg.
This is mine, with a Butler Creek sidefolder and a M-16 (A-1) style flash hider.

Sidewinder Discontinued - After several months of discussion and debate, we have decided to discontinue the Sidewinder System as a Knoxx Product. We are unable to find a vendor that can consistently provide us with parts made to specifications and we will not sell a product that doesn't function properly or reliably. The units we have sold passed rigorous testing and have all met our high standards.

Where'd you get the fake flash suppressor? What's it made out of?

It is made out of steel. I bought it off gunbroker.com a few years back. Paid about $30 shipped.

In some states it is illegal to hunt with a shotgun or rifle that holds more than a certain number of rounds. That's usually is 5 if there's a limit. Since a Mossy holds 5+1 - 2.75" shells, the mag may be "plugged" to limit capacity.
For migratory bird hunting, the limit is 3 rounds in my state, so a longer plug is needed in that case.
So its neccessarily needed, and it will still function fine without it at 7+1?

If you have the extended mag version - yes. 7+1 - 2.75"
Standard mag version is 5+1.
Outstanding. Thanks, guys.

While nothing can be done to extend the capacity of a 500, VangComp sells a +1 for the 590. I picked one up for my 5+1 18 1/2" 590, making it a 6+1. Not only does it add one round, it also adds 13% to the CDI factor.
I think you can buy a barrel suited for use with the 7-shot tube?
I recall somebody on this board doing just that and total cost was about $165. 18.5 in barrel too.
