View Full Version : Heavy walled in a Mossberg
What is the advantage of a heavy walled barrel?
Not 100% sure but I recall seeing Mossy 590A1 ads stating that their mil-spec gun withstood 3000+ rounds of buck to garner their share of the military market and that the heavy-walled barrel increased the strength of firing that many rounds in testing.
Could be hype, not sure as Uncle Sam has been known to offer contracts to the lowest bidder (no slur against 590A1's quality). They are definitely over-built for simple HD use but having owned two I can attest to their ruggedness.

The MA3's at my local Naval Air Station are all toting heavy barrelled 590's. Looks pretty intimidating as you pull up to show ID!

My understanding is that the heavier barrels were made with military service in mind, and the US Navy in particular. I was told that there were concerns from military entities that the lighter barrels might dent if they hit a metal door frame in shipboard operations. I don't have any personal knowledge of this, but it's what I was told by a Mossberg rep a few years back.
