View Full Version : We're getting a duece and a half...... DScottHewitt 03-17-2006, 12:40 Thanx to the wonderful veterans at VFW post #9339 (Stuarts Draft, VA). Scott ;b Tvov 03-17-2006, 21:22 So, you guys going to turn it into one of those monster brush trucks? Joey 03-18-2006, 18:30 Sweet, they are beasts and kill tons of fire:cool:   http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e184/Rampy556/IMG_2603b.jpg DScottHewitt 03-20-2006, 11:21 Originally posted by Tvov So, you guys going to turn it into one of those monster brush trucks? Nope. Floods and other evacuations. County-wide (at least) response. Originally, the County and the two cities were talking about buying for us, since everyone would benefit in the area. The civilians (supervisors) did not endorse that. So the VFW stepped up to help the community..... Scott P.S. Porn will follow when we get it and I can take pictures. Should be delivered early April..... ;b Ankeny 03-23-2006, 22:25 The 2 1/2 ton trucks are getting harder to come by. Shake a surplus tree and a five ton will fall out. Joey: Did you guys build that rig or is it one from State Forestry? I worked a fire with R. Smith in Colorado a few years back and he had a Laramie County truck that looked a lot like the one in the pic. R Smith was way before my time, I'm a cherry boy on the district  I'm not exactly sure who built it, but from what I've been told it's what state forestry was basing all the new packages off of. I'd be willing to bet it's the same truck as she's a oldie but a goodie. Do me a favor & swing in to the ice cream shop and have a malt, it's been a couple years since I was up there for mid-winter and have been craving some good old fashoned ice cream:cool:  obxprnstar 03-23-2006, 23:40 So what exactly is the diffrence between a five ton vs a two and a half ton? TxFire 03-24-2006, 11:10 2 1/2 Tons:winkie: obxprnstar 04-02-2006, 11:42 Originally posted by TxFire 2 1/2 Tons:winkie: lol, thanks. Is there any diffrence in how the vehicle LOOKS? Tvov 04-02-2006, 12:23 I think the 2 1/2 trucks have two rear axles with single wheels, and the 5 tons have two rear axles with dual wheels on each side. So, 2 1/2 is an 6-wheeler, and the 5 is a 10 wheeler. "Deuce and a half" has become kind of a generic nickname which for many people includes a couple different model trucks. Of course, this is a lot of assumptions on my part! Slinger646 04-03-2006, 00:48 You'll love it. We have one here across the mountain in Charlottesville. DScottHewitt 04-21-2006, 22:38 Didn't have my digicam with me and the truck was here when I went to work..... Scott :alien: nam02G 04-22-2006, 23:01 We used to have one that we called Lurch. Because that's how it drove. Top end speed of 45mph downhill. You definately had to plan ahead to get Lurch to a fire. But once he got there you couldn't stop him. DScottHewitt 04-26-2006, 06:33 Right side..... Scott :alien: DScottHewitt 04-26-2006, 06:34 Front end..... Scott :alien: DScottHewitt 04-26-2006, 06:35 Left side..... Scott :alien: Tvov 04-26-2006, 06:42 Cool! Joey 04-26-2006, 10:16 Sweet looking rig, just make sure ya play with the winch before ya need it as it's got some quirks ya can only find out about by using it. DScottHewitt 05-13-2006, 13:24 So will post "finished truck" shots tonight I took today at chicken BBQ..... On a better camera..... Of course, this is a lot of assumptions on my part! nope. 2 deuces came with dual wheels also. the military started updating there vehicles and went to a single wheel setup for both 5ton and 2 1/2ton trucks to save on cost and provide better stopping ability vs the uni-directional tires. there are a few differences between the 2 trucks besides the cargo capacity. also there were a few different versions of 5 tons from the m50 series which were hte multifuel to the m800 series which were the cat diesels. the deuces were pretty much on versious with multifuel motors. they didn't change them till the a3 setups in 97 i believe, and you won't really ever find those because they are so new. you will mainly find a2s like the one in the pics. me and my father restore and collect these vehicles. we are currently restoring a fire truck deuce for my fire dept.
