Does anyone know if the new Remington green "tactical" finish is a high tech rust resistant finish, or simply a form of coloring.

The short answer is that the green is paint. To be more precise, it is primer with green coloring added.

I have one of the green monsters in question. A few weeks ago I participated in Gunsite's five day shotgun course (260). Among the others taking the course was one of Remington's law enforcement reps. Having heard a lot of opinions about what the green stuff is, I asked the rep. He told me straight out that it is primer with green coloring added. No special lubricating or anti-rust properties whatsoever.

That said, I have literally thousand of rounds through my green 870, and have treated it pretty harshly. So far, the green coating has held up pretty well.
