My 92FS has a polymer trigger, which Wolff says isn't compatible with its trigger unit.
Can the trigger on mine be replaced with a steel trigger for the purposes of installing the Wolff trigger unit?
Is trigger spring breakage an issue that I need to be concerned about?

I installed a metal trigger and Wolff return spring unit in my Beretta 92fs Vertec, along with a 17# hammer spring. It was well worth it. The metal trigger seems to give a smoother pull, and honestly I just like the fact that it's metal. The Wolff trigger return unit is very durable, and the trigger pull is smoother and slightly lighter with all of the stacking gone. The 17# spring brings the pull weight down to where it would be on one of their DAO 92's, so it's much lighter but still within factory specifications. I've put almost 10,000 rounds through my Vertec with this trigger set-up, and everything is still working great. I've used all kinds of ammo, and some of it pretty crappy stuff. I haven't had a single problem at all.
I have a spare Beretta "short" trigger, if you're having trouble finding a factory metal trigger to install in your pistol. With Beretta not making metal triggers anymore, I've been told they are getting harder to find.

I went through my parts bin, and found a new D spring in there to go with that metal trigger. The D spring is the spring Beretta installs in their DAO pistols to make the trigger pull lighter, while still being 100% reliable. If you want to get your 92's trigger up to where it should be, I have a new metal trigger and new D spring (both Beretta factory parts). All you would need is the INS trigger return unit from Wolff. Regardless, hopefully I can at least answer some of your questions about the upgrades.

So is the steel trigger a direct replacement for the existing polymer trigger?
Yes, it is an exact replacement. I tried the Wolff unit once, and while I didn't especially like it, it's much more durable, and having a steel trigger is a plus also.

As Sonny wrote, it is a direct replacement.
