View Full Version : My Razorback RZ-10... pics
I recently purchased a blued Colt Delta Elite, DW Razorback, and Glock 29 (all 10mm). Now reloading in the caliber too. It's become a favorite caliber for me.
I finally got a chance to photograph my Razorback tonight. This is how I have set it up... this is not a carry gun for me, but a home/RV defense gun. As such, I like the size and weight to help moderate the power of the 10mm caliber. I'm using a full length guide rod and S&A arched checkered magwell both for utility and to add weight for recoil moderation. The gun is wonderful to shoot in this configuration (even with hot loads, very comfy) and reloads are really quick with the well. Feels like a "shootable Mercedes". Comes standard from the factory with flat serrated slide top, checkered front strap, Bo-Mar style adjustable sight, Ed Brown grip safety and Ed Brown thumb safety.

Wow! That thing is sharp. How much do those go for? I'm always looking to add another 10mm;)
Nice! I've been looking at adding a Dan Wesson 10MM to my collection. Have you had chance to put any rounds through her yet? I'm curious to hear a range report.
I noticed that the barrel has match on it. Was that from the factory or did you change it out?

DHart,
How do you like the front strap checkering? A friend of mine is selling his Kimber because he didn't like the feel of it. Would you describe any observations you have about the checkering on your Razorback?
Thanks!
If I recall correctly I paid about $850.
The gun has run with perfect reliability, however it crunched case mouths for awhile until the ejector was shortened.
I love the checkering.... bites nicely into the hand.
The slide to frame fit and barrel are on the tight side, DW's typically need some break-in due to the tight fit. The chamber is snug, but not too tight. The gun is very accurate. The Match barrel is stock. All I've changed is installing the S&A MSH/magwell unit.
A big thumbs up on the Razorback. THis one was built right before CZ bought DW. They are about to reissue the Razorback, this time it won't have any front strap checkering or front cocking serrations. It will come with Novak-style sights now. I'm planning to add one of the new ones to the collection as well.

Thanks for the info.
How hard was it to install the S&A Magwell yourself?
The S&A mainspring housing/magwell is a drop-in part. Take mainspring and pins out of your old MSH and put them into the new one, then re-install.

Simply gorgeous. My next 10mm (after replacing my Glock 29 for carry) will be a Razorback. I had a Kimber STII for a while and LOVED it; something tells me I'll love DW even more.

I would be to differ on the SA mag well...While it will drop in and function without any fitting, the mag funnel will likely not fit the frame perfectly. They require some blending in order to look and function the best. Fortunately with the stainless steel DW, you wouldn't have to reblue.
Wow that thing is beautiful, That puts most $1500 1911s to shame....
Rawhide20... Thanks for appreciating the gun.
Regarding magwell fitting, I'm no expert, but for my money and my use, the magwell fits just fine... perhaps there could be some artistic blending inside the magwell to please a highly critical eye, but the magwell looks fine to me as is and I can rapidly pop mags in there at a variety of angles and they all find their way home in a hot hurry. Functionally, and from a casual observation, I don't see a need for any work other than popping the unit on the gun. And you're right, if someone wanted to do some additional blending inside the magwell, stainless is the perfect material for that... no refinishing required.

DHart,
Once again, that sure is nice. How does it shoot compared to other 1911s you've owned. Accuracy and Reliability?
You're absolutely right that it isn't necessary. The way they come from the factory, the S&A will greatly increase reload speed as you mentioned. I've fitted about 6 S&A mainspring/magwells myself for friends and my own use, and greatly enjoyed the results. Not only does it speed up reloads more, but it looks consistent with the quality of the weapon you have. For me it is more of a matter of asthetics, and pride.:clown: . A friend of mine carries a Kimber as his duty weapon and had the factory Kimber Magwell put in, and the same deal with his...needs a little fitting. But he carries it that we anyway and doesn't mind. It could be that I have OCD, but it would drive me nuts!!:freak:
Just don't let me alone with yer' new toy cause I might.... :stop:...just kidding. Seriously, it is really easy to do. If you should decide to do it, it is really simple. The key is to go slow, be patient, and make do it as perfect as possible.
Beautiful gun! If I get back into 1911s, I think Dan Wesson might be the ticket....
RH
P.s. Love those Ed Brown components in there! What a great value!!
RH... the accuracy is excellent. I haven't conducted any super precise tests, but I'm thrilled with how consistently well it hits. I do a lot of double tap combat distance shooting, 6 yard stuff which isn't challenging to a decent gun. This gun is far more capable than what I typically use it for.
It's fed and ejected with perfect reliablility, though these are very tight guns from the factory. Mine was crunching empty case mouths on about half of the rounds until the ejector was shortened. But that didn't cause the gun to stop functioning. I've had a couple of instances of the slide not returning back to battery in the middle of a mag... kind of weird. I may try a little beefier recoil spring for awhile, as DW installs a 20# variable in these guns, which some might consider a little light for 10mm. So far I'm mostly chalking this up to tightness/newness... but it's still a bit disconcerting to me because my personal frame of reference is the more forgiving tolerances of my many Colt 1911's which typically run as reliably as the sun from the moment you pull them out of the box. I don't have much experience with these really tight 1911's that often require a fair bit of wear-in before they run perfectly...
All in all I am very happy I bought this gun... it's a real pleasure to shoot, looks fantastic, feels good. I'm tempted to buy another one, this time with Novak night sights for a little variation. For the money, I think it was a bargain... series 70 firing system, EB grip safety, EB thumb safety, EB slide stop, checkered front strap, Bo-Mar clone sights. It really didn't need any changes of parts to make it nice... I just put on the magwell because I had it sitting around and thought I'd try it. Now that it's on the gun, I plan to leave it on... it works so well and adds just a little more heft to moderate the hotter 10mm loads.
DHART, nice photos and a very nice looking 1911 style 10mm at that. I have been waiting for three months for my Delta Elite to come back from Novak,s and this week might be the week. If so I will make sure and post some images. Have you heard anything on the commander size 10mm that is supposed to be coming from Dan Wesson?
Roneye... thanks for appreciating the pics. I'm really looking forward to seeing your Novak modified Delta!
A few of the new DW CBOB's in 10mm have trickled out to market. All I've heard is that the slide stop's have needed a peened indent to prevent early slide lock back. I'm not sure I want to venture into a Commander sized 10 given the complexities of making such a hot caliber run right with a shorter slide, especially in a gun as tightly built as a Dan Wesson... but I may give in someday...
