I'm new to installing scopes and rifles in general, need some advice. What's the correct way to install a scope to insure that it doesn't move around when shooting. The reason I ask is I recently tried to install a small bsa scope to my 10/22 and at the end of everytime I shoot I notice it has slid forward down the rail(by maybe an inch), even though i tightened it pretty good. It affect accuracy and I'd like to find a good way to make my scope "stay put". Any advice greatly appreciated.

or maybe you have the bases on backwards.
On a 22 rail it could make a difference. Are the rings moving on the rail?
If the scope is moving in the rings you can shim it maybe a piece of tape on the scope before you put it into the rings.

That's exactly what I do!

...at the end of everytime I shoot I notice it has slid forward down the rail(by maybe an inch)[emphasis mine], even though i tightened it pretty good.If this scope is moving that much on the rail, it's highly likely that you've not got the one ring that really has the cross-stud in it sitting in the rail's groove. It matters not whether it's the front or rear ring, but likely one of them has a full-width cross stud that mates up to the rail's groove. THAT's the one that will determine where you can position the scope on the rail.
Loosen your rings (not around the scope, but their grip on the rail. Put some pressure with your finger tip to make sure that the cross-bolt is actually in a slot, while making sure that the claw portion of the other ring isn't so loose as to come all the way up off the rail.
Tighten them both to where they're just barely starting to tighten and you're sure that the cross-bolt is up against the groove that you've selected for best position of the scope. Having the gun in a padded vise or a sturdy area for this work will get you the best results. Put some pressure on the scope to shove it forward toward the muzzle end and tighten the ring that has the cross-bolt. This does that extra little bit to insure that the scope ring's cross-bolt is up against the forward edge of the slot. Now tighten both rings up equally, loosen the rings ON the scope to readjust your eye-relief - if needed - and check things at the range.
Thought: If the above was a remedy to the problem, your gun may now likely be shooting way high, so get it back on paper at close range first before you do some final zeroing. Hope this helps.

Let me guess: you are using the factory 'scope rail' that Ruger gives you with the 10/22.
It has no cross slots, it is thin and flimsy, it will deform itself under the ravages of .22lr recoil.
Spend the few bucks and get a Power Custom or similar Weaver rail for a 10/22. Use blue Locktite to secure the base to the receiver and to hold the base mounting screws tight. You'll also have to get rings compatable with a Weaver rail, they can be had for $10 for ones suitable for a 10/22.

maybe in the old days the factory mount was stronger.
I have shot mine for 25 years the scope is still on target.

Yep, same here; the newer ones I've seen aren't going to crumble either, but you do need to get the crossbolt into the rail, however shallow.

I don't know what they used to supply with the 10/22, but the scope rail they give you now is crap. There is NO slot for the rings' crossbolt.
