OK, guys, kind of new to the whole Tactical Shotgun thing.. but I am sold on the fact that it is a good fit for my primary HD weapon.

The local pawn shop seems to be really wanting to get rid of some stuff... here are a couple of options and questions:

(All are 12 guage pumps and are handled and in "fair" shape)
All also have ported barrel.. not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Mossberg Maverick $125.00, it's way long, like 28"???? Plastic stock, looks to be more of a hunting gun.

Mossberg 500A, OD, $130.00, also quite long.

Remington 870 Express, $130, roughest of the bunch.

My questions.. the barrels are all long. Is it possible/recommended/legal to make them into 18" or 18 1/2" like i've seen many tactical shotguns?

If I get these, with "plastic" stocks, is it possible to swap stocks out to a more tactical stock? Is it worth the money?

Thanks for the input guys.. will post pix of whatever I end up posting!

It is legal to cut a shotgun barrel down to a length that is 18" or greater. Remember that the ATF measures barrel length by dropping a dowl down the barrel with the bolt forward and mearsuring the lenght of the dowl even with the end of the barrel.

Many after market stocks are available for the 870 and the 500A. The Maverick is a Chinese clone of the Mossberg 500/590. However, not all after market accessories that fit on the original Mossberg will fit on the Maverick copy.

Reminton sells new 870 Expresses in "tactical" clothes (18" bbl, extended magazine) which retail anywhere from $300 to $400, new. I would recommend you purchase a new 870.

You can buy new barrels and stocks or have the longer barrels cut down but in the end you would come out ahead if you just go a buy a new shotgun the way you want it.

No it's not. It's made in Texas. And the barrels are interchangable with the Mossberg 500.

You should be able to pick up a new Maverick at your local Wallyworld or Big 5 Sports for not much more then $160. Sometimes Big 5 has them on sale with a long barrel and a short one.

Maverick® and Mossberg® choke tubes are interchangeable.

Maverick® 88™ barrels are compatible with Mossberg® 500® model barrels within gauge and capacity.
