I was recently looking at a 92S for sale.
I am not very familiar with that model.
What is the difference between S and F?
How does S differ from the M9?
Thank you for your input.

I posted this a few weeks ago, but it should answer your questions. --ST
"C" in referance to the 92 series is compact, "constant action" in relation to the Px4
"D" is Double action only
"DS" Double action only with a slide mounted safety
"EL" High end collector guns. Usually found with gold or silver inlay and or engraving.
"F" Traditional DA/SA with a safety/decock.
"FS" Same as "F" with the internal modification of a larger hammer pin to catch the rear portion of the slide in case of seperation.
"G" DA/SA with a decock only, no safety. The "G" designator is for Gendarmerie, the French Military Police, for whom the system was designed. They call it the PAMAS G-1.
"S" is safety. When the safety was moved from the frame to the slide (mag release remains on heel).
"S-1" was the designator used to identify the first 92 with a slide safety and the mag release in the traditional location (base of triggergaurd).
"SB" Same as above with the addition of a firing pin block
"SB-F" Transitional model that is functionall the same as the SB but with the changes required by the USAF for the M9 trials (squared triggergaurd). This is the first incarnation of the modern 92FS.
"L" Compact high capacity frame.
"M" single stack frame compact (sometimes also called a MC)
You will also occasionally see a 92 listed as a FS-W, G-W, D-W, FS-P, G-P, D-P ect. that is how Beretta marked the cardboard boxes if the gun came with factory Wood stocks
So what is the difference between a M9 and a 92 series? Beretta's website lists the two guns separately and the M9 costs about $200 more than the 92 series.

Well, the short answer is very little. But I'm going under the assumption that you were looking for a little more in-depth explanation sooooo.
The M9 is basically a 92FS, the two are functionally identical and the only real difference is cosmetic. The M9 (obviously) is marked M9 along with all of the .gov ASSY numbers and box/manual to match. The frame also differs slightly from new manufactured 92's in that the dust cover is straight rather than slanted. I specify new manufactured because until a few years ago all M9s and 92's were straight. When they started putting rails on 90 series guns, it was decided for whatever reason to leave some of the extra material on the dustcover to form a slant on guns without a rail.
So I am spending $200 more for a M9 so that I can get a nice box and presentation? Sounds as if I should purchase a 92 series and spend the extra $200 on ammo.
Thanks for the info.

In a nutshell, yea, you're paying for presentation. Realistically, you're not going to pay $200 over, most retailers know better than to mark them up like that, they'd never sell.

Plus the fact that the M9's they are selling are Commemorative and limited to a certain amount of guns. + $200 is MSRP and a little searching around and you can find some in the $575-$625 range. The local gunshows around here have had a few for like $599.

There were (so far) three editions of M9 pistols for sale to the general public. The latest model is still being shipped from the factory and has either a plain style or the version with presentation box and service medallions.
There were a bunch of 92FS models being sold as branch specific commeratives of the M9 as well.
The M9 Special Edition is now out of production and the 475th year M9 is out of production the latest commercial model is still out there.
The special edition had a lot of goodies:

The 475th had a 475 prefix on the serial number plus a pin and some paper:
