I think... the 9mm requires a different breechface.
I could be wrong, but I believe that's what I've read over on Brianenos.com.
Maybe try asking in the gunsmith section over there, I believe there have been quite a few threads about people converting 38super to 9mm.

1911 38super slide's have been used for many years with 9mm barrels. The extractor would have to be properly tuned for 9mm rims.
I've seen some convertions that ran just fine.
If you have the 38 slide, run a 9mm case up the center of the bold face to see how and were the extractor contacts the 9mm rim and groove.

The conversion should work fine with only a barrel change. I run 38 super/super comp and a 9mm in a 1911 with only a barrel and recoil spring change. Same extractor. The 9mm functions better in the 1911 mags when loaded longer than standard oal.
Try a few 9mm rounds through your 38 super barrel to see if a barrel change is for you.

4eyes,
how about the slide? the compact is shorter than the standard tanfoglio right?

Barrel length should make no difference. The chamber diameter is the same for both cartridges. Only the chamber length is different, 9mm being shorter. I shot a few 9mm rounds through my 38 super barrel prior to buying a 9mm barrel.
